Driving without overlay + Speed limits

Hello,

I'm a total newbie in the area of train simulators. Recently I purchased Train Simulator 2013 and I'm having a blast. However, there's one thing that I can't figure out.

I found myself enjoying operating the train without the virtual overlay controls on my screen. I just read the objectives, and operate the train using the real controls in the cockpit. I also like to toggle the overlay off using F3/F4 to have a better immersion into it. However, I can't figure out the speed limit signs on the track. Without the linear map on the overlay, how is it possible to determine the max speed at which I'm allowed to drive the train on the current section/upcoming section?

On a different note, the game manual says the mousewheel is supposed to zoom the camera view, but it doesn't seem to work from inside the cockpit. Anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks much!

Knowing the speed on the track comes from running the track often enough to know where what speed is allowed. There are signs along the routes (in most cases) that show the speed when it changes, but normally there are no signs anymore once it is set. Some things you learn the hard way, like crossing switches which in the US is normally 40 miles/h and 60 km/h in European routes is not always posted, so you also have to remember what route you are on, but there are always exceptions. Some switches in German routes can be taken at 120 km/h.

And the speed displayed in the HUD might not always be the correct speed. It is a known issue that not all speed changes show up in the HUD.
