Incline indicator

Unread postby maxsdad » Thu Oct 11, 2012 3:55 pm

Hello:

Can anyone tell me why the "Incline indicator" reads off of the last cars of a train? When changing angles the engine power reacts as soon as they change and speed is affected then too, but the indicator doesn't change until the last cars reach that point. That can take a long time with a long train.
If the speed is affected right away why can't they make the indicator react right away too? The logic of the way it is now is beyond me.
If anyone knows the reason why it is the way it is, I would appreciatte if you could explain it to me.

Thanks

I don't know the reason for it displaying the incline at the rear of the train, but having a single read-out at one point is always going to be inadequate wherever it is reading - if it was reading the front of the train then it would be displaying misleading information when 90% of the train was on an incline but not the lead few cars.

What I would like is for it to be easier to see the gradients all along the track shown in the HUD - at the moment I can't even tell whether it is an upwards or downwards gradient sometimes! Maybe the gradient and direction could be displayed at various points along the track, especially where there is a large change, then you could see exactly which parts of the train are on what gradient, and what gradients are coming up.

A possible solution would be to show the gradient at the front of the train on the right. That way you would have the gradient at the front and back at any given point.

CrimsonKing:

I like your idea. The first and last car indicator sounds good to me. Especially since the incline rate affects the train as soon as the engine crosses over it. It's very disconserting when the train all of a sudden starts speeding up or slowing down and the reading shows 0.0. If you take your eyes off the screen just as the engine crosses a change you would not know what was happening or why.
If you remember, the old F3 HUD gave a very good indication of what was coming up as a line vector. You could watch the change as it got closer and even tell how steep the change was going to be. Taking that away was a very bad decision by RSC in my opnion.
