A tunnel occlusion asset to put over the tracks. All is fine and well, but shouldn't we really demand a more permanent solution? Can this "occlusion" also be added to default assets?

Just like the asset tiles, I believe it to be re-sizable, so no, you cannot add it as a child to another asset.
Cheers!

Understood. And a permanent "tunnel occlusion" will probably have the disadvantage you cannot reach inside the station, roundhouse, etc. anymore to put vehicles on the tracks.

NYC's Penn Station stays dry IIRC, and putting trains on the track is a PITA.

Just FYI, the version on UKTS is a modified copy of an asset that is included by default with TS2013 called Tunnel Occlusion Volume - find it under the Misc icon in the world editor.
JiveBunny's version on UKTS cuts down on the amount of light cut out by default, making it more useful for enclosed but light places like under bridges and station roofs etc.

Users can make their own Occlusion xml's and add them as child objects to objects in the asset editor.
I have only played with them so far but I may do a tutorial when my next route requires me to do them.
btw, UKTS did not have the solution... RS.com did. :)
