Hello fellow Railworks fans!

My name is Ted. I just got Railwroks 3 a couple weeks ago and love it so far! This is my first time using this kind of software. So far I've been able to do some neat things with sounds and paint reskins. My first project is 3 Seabord System GP38-2's based from Justin Cornell's original GP 38-2. Since I'm new to all this, I found a KCS re-paint pack that had a nice grey weathered unit to use as a good starting point. I pretty much have the 3 locos finished. There are only a few things I'd like to do to make them better. The first thing is that I want to change the horn from an S-3L to an RS-5T and move the horn to the top of the cab. Does anyone on here know how I could do that? Then I want to delete the air vent on the side of the cab. Also is there any way to make the nose lights on the loco a bit lower on the nose? I think that's it as far as graphic details go.

Now my biggest question and first thing I want to start doing asap. Is there any way I can use Kuju's SD40-2 sounds to replace Justin Cornell's GP38-2 sounds? What I want to do is, basically use kuju's sound setup folder with my own custom sound files and go into Justin's GP38-2 folder delete everything and replace with Kuju''s sounds. But I want it in Justin's sound folder only. This way it won't change my sd40-2 sounds at all. If I can do this I can have a nice full notching sound project for the GP38-2. I just got some very awesome raw sounding EMD 645E-16 NT sound files that sound very awesome. As a test I used Kuju's SD40-2 folder and what I did was replace all the sounds with my own sounds. It sounds so awesome! After that test I now can replace sounds. I also did the GP38-2 sound package update on here. I replaced the sound in that folder. Only thing is it does not have all 8 notches for sound. So I had to just replace the Idle Lo Mid Hi, and bark file and etc. I don't like it as much cause it pitch bends the files for notching. I want all 8 to be separate davs or wavs like Kuju's.

I've tried coping all of Kuju's SD40-2 audio into the GP38-2 folder. I also opened the proxyxml file and all other audio files in that folder and went in and replaced the locations to the GP38 folder but still did not work. So I'm guessing there must be a file somewhere else that must tell the program to use GP38-2 sounds or something. Or maybe I could just open the proxyxml and change the code to Kuju's. I'll try that but I still think theres other things to do than just that. I have no idea how to do anything on here. I learned everything on my own for the most part so far. If anyone has any info that wound be great. Also if there's any kind of instructions out there for creating your own custom project that would be awesome! When I get the full project finished I will upload them all on here for free for you all to enjoy. What I really want to be able to do down the road is make a complete project from scratch. :)

Thanks for the info I got this to work 2 different ways. The first attempt was I went into the GP38-2 audio folder replaced the proxyxml and bin files with the SD40 bin and proxyxml files. Then I opened both the bin and proxyxml files I replaced every path from:Kuju\RailSimulatorUS\Audio\RailVehicles\Diesel\SD40 to JCornell\EMD\Audio\RailVehicles\Diesel\16-645E_R. Of cousre I had to rename the files from sd40 to 645E and etc. I then copied all the dav file into the folder. I did a few more small changes but that was it. I started the game everything work great. Only problem is that for some reason when I notch up the rev up files make a sound that's too late. For instance if I go from idle to 13%, just like the SD40 the sound does not notch up yet. Now once I get to 25% on the throttle just like the SD40 it notches up into the T_N2 dav file. A few seconds after that while staying at 25% on the throttle for some reason it makes the next notch up sound and then goes back into N2.dav file. It does this all the way to 100%. But once 100% is on for a sec the sound cuts off for T_N8.dav. What I think happened is on the original GP38-2 sounds the engine will notch up at 13%. With the new SD40 sounds the engine notches at 25%. There must be something in the bin or xml sound file that tells the locomotivce to notch up at a certain throttle percentage. I'd like to change it so it starts at 25% like the sd40 does.

My next attempt was what Chacal said. I changed the files started the game and it worked the same way as my first attempt. But it was so much easier to do this way. It still notches up wrong. Something needs to be changed somewhere for this to work just like the SD40-2. It must be in the xml sound file or bin sound file??? Thanks for the info Chacal. If anyone has any info that would be awesome!

My next question is, what does the locomotive use to find the sound files it needs in order to work? I'm guessing it's looking for the sound bin file. But what file in the locomotive folder does it use to do this? For instance say I download the MP GP15. I tried it and noticed it had no sounds with it. When I started it in the game it sounded like it was using the SD40 sounds. So somewhere in the GP15 folder there must be a code or something that told the engine to use SD40 sounds. Anybody have any ideas. I'm guessing it's the bin file perhaps. I'll keep trying these ideas. Once it gets finished I'll upload a new GP38-2 sound pack.

Everything about the engine is in the blueprints (including your specific question about throttle notches), which are .xml files that have been "compiled" into .bin files using serz.exe. When there are both a xml and a bin file with the same name, the game will use the xml (I think).
The easiest way to manage and edit blueprints is by using RW_Tools, a donationware program that you can try before buying. Otherwise you use serz.exe in the RW program folder.

When investigating an engine, start by looking at the engine blueprint in the engine directory (in your case, that would be in steamapps\common\railworks\Assets\JCornell\EMD\RailVehicles\Diesel\GP38-2\[engine name]\Engine). It contains links to all other blueprints used for this engine: simulation, bogies, couplers, cab, sounds, etc. From there you can find your way to the needed information.

It is common practice to just link to an already existing blueprint to save time an effort.

The RSC support page at railsimulator.com (http://railsimulator.com/support.php) has a link to "RSDevTools" which is an exe that will install the developper documentation in PDF format. Everything you need to know about blueprints is in there.

Thanks again for the info Chacal. I will check out the RSDevTools from the railworks website.. So far I figured out a few more things. I can also change sounds for each individual GP38-2 just by changing the path in the bin and xml files. This is pretty neat. I can now have a different horn for each engine number and etc. I still have not figured out the throttle settings that are keeping me from getting the sound pproject right. After I read the link sent me, I'll try what I can and let ya know what happens. The path you sent me earlier does in fact change the sounds for sure. If you get a chance, could you test it to see if your getting the same results as me? Thanks again for everything.

Will this sound change work with other models as well? I've been wanting to switch the SD40 HighNose and SD40 WideNose to use the same sounds as the regular SD40-2

It should from what I know of so far. Give it a try using the path link above from Chacal. But I'd back up the files first. Hope this helps.

Yes. Since I'm lazy, I just copied the proxyxml file from the SD40-2 to each of the other SD40-2 packs, renaming the file when needed.
ACtually I do that with a script, because these changes are overwritten every time I do a verify local cache in Steam.

Doc wrote a neat little batch file to copy your customizations back after a reverification. I would find the link but I am mobile now and copy/paste is a pain.

Yep I did try the GP38-2 package update. It's better than the original for sure. I made an updated sound pack out of it with some my own sounds. It sounds ok but it only uses Idle Lo Mid Hi and Bark for the prime mover sounds. What I don't like is how it pitch bends the sounds. I like the SD40-2 sounds because I can have all 8 sounds for notching. There is some pitch bending on that file but it does a better job blending them in with the notches and rev up sounds. If all else fails I'll just have to use the the GP38-2 update sound pack. I just read everything about the blueprints and etc.from RWDevTools. I learned some things but It's confusing to me. I tried fixing the notching issue but have failed every time. I missed up so bad that I'm reinstalling my railworks game again right now. lol If anyone wants to try and test out this idea try:

This will work with SD40-2 sounds. But if you try you'll hear the notching problem I'm having. If anyone can fix this please feel free to let me know. I'd love to get this project finished. I wish I understood all these things better. Reading and researching everything has been very confusing to me. I'm new to all this and am not very smart at all.
