rolling stock poly count

Unread postby eyein12 » Tue Jul 31, 2012 1:48 pm

I am finishing up a trash car, but need advice on polys for this. since this is my first rolling stock model. my poly count is at about 17K, is this too high for freight? the model consists of a flatcar and 4 containers on top.

I know the dev docs say 10 but those are so old values and was wondering if anyone has ventured further north in poly count

thanks

A lot depends on material counts also. I'd imagine with suitable LODs you'll be ok. How many of your cars are likely to be in a scene?

you must remember the limit was for the generic car thats put in the game....one around 50' or so....yours is going to be roughly 85', so it should technicaly work out right if you think of it this way....

17k is just fine, provided you can keep the material calls to a minimum as stated above.
Cheers!

I plan on using 1 map for all of it. maybe 2 at the most. and I guess 2 shaders at the most, 1 for the wheel contact and 1 for the body.

I actually got the count back down to 13K, so I can add some more details now. I should be fine then thanks.
