I agree, and it's often caused by a missing GEOPCDX file for me, and I have to hunt down the file and fix the problem, it should say "Error- Filename.GEOPCDX not found." Or whatever depending on the error.

I agree!, and I usually get this up to 10 times daily without changing anything. It is the most annoying things about this great sim.

It's not the SBHH that I mind. It's the dump file that cannot be read by end users. If it gave me something in plain english, even if it were some perplexing technical jargon, it might give me a clue that it were something I could fix. Also, an "Auto Save upon SBHH" switch would be nice. 3DCanvas has this, and even though it's constantly crashing, i've never lost any work. It gives you the choice to recover your work at the point of the crash or start fresh.

Be diplomatic in how you word your emails to RSC. What would be even worse would be a crash that just happens and gives you no information at all.

Have made 2 requests in past to RSC to get this done.

I also posted about this in another thread, I've sent an e-mail to support (about the cause of crashing when I was editing the scenario and what was reported into dump file) and they replied that it's not a thing they support followed by a wish of best luck on this!
SMMDigital wrote:(....) it might give me a clue that it were something I could fix.

Or, at least, something I could not repeat, avoiding a new (in fact same) crash for the same unknown reason which caused the previous one.

I'm having a lot of SBHH's right now. I have 7 scenarios that work fine on my mainframe, and when I switch them to my laptop, four of them SBHH as soon as they open. May be a memory issue, may be that I am missing something on my laptop that I have on the main, but hell, I don't know because there is no way to read a .dmp file.

Actually there is a way to read .dmp files but I'm not sure that its intuitive and it is quite difficult to set up, but it can be done using dumpchk.exe ref http://support.microsoft.com/kb/156280 but to do that you have to install the Windows debug tools http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows ... 63009.aspx. After getting that far I decided it was not worth going on as my PC would end up cluttered with unnecessary files that might only need occasionally. :D

I haven't looked to see if a plain hex editor might work again for the reasons above.
I support the notion that we need something much better than the cryptic SBHH.
I have found using the inbuilt Windows (7) reliability monitor that most errors are due (in my case) to exception code c0000005 which may indicate an issue in the Virtual (process) Address space. (VMMAP confirms issues in the VAS).
There are also MSVCR100.dll errors and some obscure stackhash errors - so there are a variety of errors that we need a plain English guide as to what is causing them.

On a side note the stack errors may not be a fault in MSVCR100 but a side affect from the app not handling an exception properly and corrupting the stack while unwinding the thread.

I had better bite my tongue now or I will start going off on coding techniques, and put everyone to sleep.

Exactly! The errors are obscure and generic and without being able to interpret the dmp file - we are lost in the wilderness! !*don-know!*

It just dawned on me (I should have thought of this sooner) even if the dmp file was readable, without the source it would be still be useless to us.

So it really boils down to having RSC giving us proper error messaging.

My experience (I don't do route building tho, just scenarios, and driving) is that there are two main reasons for SBHHs. One is the game running out of memory - which RS.com can fix by optimizing the game engine better (something that definately should be done). The other is from meddling with scenarios in RW_Tools, which is hardly something RS.com can do much about...

Its far more than that. If you add a model which has a corrupt or missing GEO, as soon as you place the object (we are talking from within the editor here) you get an instant SBHH. The same goes if you the GEO was bad post editing, post "OK everything looks good lets package it up", post "I've been running this fine for weeks, what happened!".

The error message is meaningless. Its an excuse to get out of doing the proper thing, which is to handle each exception type.

I need to stop ranting now. Maybe walk outside for a bit.

I think the benefits of RW_Tools outweigh it's quirks, but along the same lines, there is a question. RW_T is showing me several Empty Consists in a scenario. Is this cause for alarm or an SBHH?

To me, this is like asking Microsquirt to fix all the BSOD's. Just isn't possible. But at least most of the time you get a "STOP" error code, which you can look up and kind of figure out. Sometimes, that is. so, maybe RSC can make a SBHH 0X000000034, and create a list, what does it mean? what to look for?

the downside? I am 100% sure, even RSC doesn't know what all the SBHH errors are from. Fumbling in the dark but not as bad as we are. Bottom line, they can't and probably never will fix SBHH. Maybe minimize it, but like the BSOD's, they will never, ever go away completely. After all, you cannot account for the configuration of every different PC on the planet, and I know hardware has a big part in SBHH and BSOD. Unless you want RW on the Ex Boxx or PS3. !*not-ok*!
