List of Issues: Donner Pass

This post last updated: 11/25/11 19:20 MST

Major Issues (effect playability or physics realism):
1) Track Gradient changes throughout entire route are abrupt and extremely unrealistic.
2) Easements into curves, and the propensity of direct S-curves are unrealistic.
3) Broken Scenarios ("Under Pressure" unavoidable derailment, and "Powering Up" possible signalling error)
4) Track Signals work incorrectly. Block occupancy should start at the first car past the signal, changing it at that point. Not the last car through.
5) Manual Switch targets are animated backward i.e. Green for diverging, which is incorrect.
6) ...

Obvious Issues (issues that should have never made it past beta):
1) White walkway stripes on SD40 and SD40T-2 locos should be removed to be consistent with the rest of the paint scheme.
2) Dash 9 numbers are in 4000 range, not the correct 8100-8200 range
3) Numerous tunnel portals have errors, are missing, or have terrain intruding or closing off the entrance.
4) Numerous scenery bleedthroughs inside tunnels and snow sheds.
5) Numerous grade crossings are not properly aligned to tracks, or are the wrong type for the crossing.
6) Many bridges poorly aligned to tracks right of way.
7) Ballast terrain texture is inconsistent with track location (on Pass) in several spots.
8) SD40 is listed as an SD40-2. SP never had any SD40-2's
9) SW1500 radiator mesh still broken and floating around the unit (may need to be solved with a core update)
10) Many areas of unfinished scenery, such as hump yard at Roseville.
11) Majorly sunken buildings, trees, into terrain throughout route.
12) Many trees, buildings, cars, etc, floating throughout route (evident near the right of way in Truckee)
13) Bright light washes out color and texture. Use Horseshoe Curve Time of Day instead.
14) Some switch stands positioned incorrectly, showing in-between rails
15) ...

Other issues (anything else - may be subjective)
1) Rear anticlimber of SD40T-2 is invisible from below.
2) View distance appears to be much less than that of other TS2012 routes.
3) All roads are way out of scale, about twice as wide as they should be.
4) Dash 9 cab is similar to ATSF cabs, incorrect for SP
5) Truckee river is more like a man made canal - banks too manicured.
6) Many road grades are grossly incorrect, slope wrong way, or are positioned incorrectly.
7) Precipitation falls inside snowsheds.
8) SD40s and 40T-2s float off rails.
9) Area around track right of way lacks detail, outside of cities. Driving on a "forested moonscape. "
10) Compared to other route releases, ground textures do not seem realistic for this region.
11) Little variation of foliage, trees are too 'bland'
12) ...

Bleedthroughs, texture issues like missing ballast and rocks sticking through tunnels, track gradient issues, and poorly positioned items:

For those interested, I've split MontanaRails list of issues into a new thread.

Let's try to keep this thread strictly about issues that have been found and can be listed.

General comments should go in the other thread. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4084

I've also sticky'd it for the time being.

I have an issue to add, the the crossing signals are all wrong. I'm having to manually replace them because some that should be cantilievers aren't, some are missing additional gates that are at the location in real life, and the light sequence starts way to long before the train enters the crossing, on 20 mph track the gates should drop about a minute before the approaching train, not 4+ minutes, the gates are also floating to the left of the signal mast in most places also.

This is something I've already fixed on my SP Dash 9s. If you guys want I can upload a numbering dcsv file that will give them the correct number range.

Add to the list a problem in the Powering up Scenerio, the only way you can finish the scenario is to disregard a red signal inside the snow shed. Hitting tab will not give you permission.

Route Errors - Manual switch red/green targets appear to be reversed - all the ones I looked at in the Roseville and Sparks Yards showed red for straight and green for diverging.

My impressions:
- It still is an impressive route although appearing to be not to well tested.
- For the current half price, quite a deal.
- Unless just a local switching activity, get ready for lengthy activities.

Just a reminder, I'm working on fixing this route, if you think you could help in any way or think you have an issue that needs to be fixed urgently, please tell me here:
viewtopic.php?f=31&t=4100
And I'll fix it for you. I have viewed all of these issues and am working on sections, 1 at a time. So far I am at Reno, if you want anything fixed in Reno, please let me know and I'll try to get to it. Thanks!

Putting the gap in "Emigrant Gap":

Locos change numbers when you zoom in too close. This is the "Roseville" free roam scenario. All the locos in the consist were doing this:

Zoom a little more:

Trees disappear when you get close to them. LOD settings reversed maybe? Before:

Move a couple of feet closer and several of them disappear:

An entire hill of trees that vanish when you get close. Far:

You can add to your list that on the highways road traffic still "undertakes". A detail I know but most unrealistic.

I noticed the speedometer is reading the speed of the last engine in the consist, not the first (try the coal train scenario for an example).

Yes I colored those boxes SP's colors ^.^

Edit:

The real crossing here at truckee is actually a cantilever !*hp*!

Excuse me, but you show a pic with SMMDigital crossing gates that are obviously not the originals and blame RSC for it? !**conf**!

Might I suggest if you take screenshots, you do them in the route editor with the nav panel open so that anyone trying to find the spots has the coords? either that or note them down yourself. On a route this size finding a particular spot might take quite some time...
