Found this at the bottom of today's email from RSC:
Update news

We've been working very hard to identify what has caused performance issues on some of your PC’s. We are currently beta testing a small patch to TS2012 that we believe will address many of the issues that have been raised.

In particular:
1. We've optimised the anti-aliasing techniques available. This should largely avoid the need for multisampling. Multisampling is a technique that should only be used on the highest specification machines.
2. We've improved how we make use of multiple core-equipped CPUs to make for a smoother experience with less overhead.
3. We've fixed problems associated with running legacy graphics cards that do not support Pixel Shader 3.

We obviously need to give this Patch a thorough test before we release it, so it will be a couple of weeks before we install this, but rest assured that we are listening to your feedback and trying to provide the best experience for the widest set of PC capabilities.

If you are experiencing technical issues with Train Simulator 2012 please email support@railsimulator.com

We'll see if it's "Good News" or not when we get it .

Hmm. 1 is relatively meaningless because I'm pretty sure most people aren't bottlenecking there - although obviously good to have anyway, and 3 is good for people who want RW2 back, that's for sure. Let's hope 2 is a radical improvement - if whatever is chewing all the CPU time up building a scene is given it's own core, that might solve lots of the periods of FPS loss.

I wonder if they misspoke and actually meant supersampling - makes more sense if you substitute that.

It's great to hear something might be happening on the performance front. I'm pretty new to the game having bought it just before the TS2012 upgrade, and bought Horseshoe Curve and NEC when they came out, but I've since abandoned thoughts about buying more DLC as the sim hasn't been offering the experience I was expecting on my system - for me, too much of the immersiveness is lost when the graphics get stuttery.

In the meantime it would be awesome if more people could produce an FPS log while playing, so there'll be a stronger basis for some decent before-and-after comparisons. Am particularly interested in results/specs/settings from people who've reported being happy with the performance on their system.

Yes, i would have to agree with Snowstorm. They could have meant super sampling.
I use multisampling with my rig and dont think that is the bottleneck. I get 50-65 fps
on most routes, but only 15fps on the NEC. I have a Quad core processor and AMD 6950
video card, which is no slouch. Can run Dirt 3 at 60fps with all settings on highest with no
sweat. I understand there are more graphics i.e buildings and cars etc. on the NEC. but i still
get studdering . I can only hope the multicore fix will make for a smoother run.

I'm still confused about frame rates and stuttering. Sometime my frame rates drop down into the mid to even low teens and the picture is still cycling smoothly. Other times rates can be up at twenty or more and the darn thing is stuttering like crazy. The worst is when you just seem to be getting a snap shot every half second or so. Neither my GPU or CPU seem to be running at max and yet the game is showing unacceptable behavior. What part of this don't I understand?
!*don-know!*
