How do I throw switches from the 9 view?

I see a lot of scenario instructions that say "use the 9 view to make sure the switches are lined correctly" but I cannot work out how to actually change them. Clicking them in the map does nothing.

Also in a freeroam scenario if there are switch stands I can fly ahead of the train in the "8" view and use the mouse to change switches, but if there are no switch stands, then the only way I can see to change a switch is with "G" and "shift G". However this only works on the switch immediately ahead of or behind the train.

So for example in the attached pic, if I wanted to throw switch #2 I would have to creep up to it and try to stop the train with the front of the lead loco between #1 and #2, then "G" will work on #2. This seems absurd to me, I must be missing something.

Can anyone let me in on the trick?

You can throw any switch anywhere on the 2D map by holding down a shift key and left clicking on the switch.

This is spelled out in the short Driver's manual in your manuals folder.

Like Griphos said, shift and left click when in the 2D (9 key) map. BUT, only works if you see a blue circle. Otherwise it's an automatic switch, scenario controlled, and unless you go into edit mode, you can't change it.
