Shadows-All Objects Need Them

Hi,
All objects don't need them, however objects placed trackside should really have them.
I have a number of materials set up that don't cast shadows. (rivots and small geometry etc)
Everything has a cost and getting the balance right bwteen performance and graphics is always a compromise.

Derek - I can certainly understand rivets and small geometry items not having shadows, but why would the barrels in Dick's post not have them?
I've also noticed some rollingstock does not display a shadow while others in the consist do.

I'm not complaining or anything. I'd just like to understand why this is happening.
