RailWorks 3 - Multi-Core & Other Settings!

Unread postby Hawk » Wed Sep 28, 2011 4:44 am

There's a good thread over at UKTrainSim, started by Kromaatikse, about the settings for RW3. How to set them up on your particular system and also what they do.

http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 9&t=118677

In particular is the option (checkbox) for Multi-Core.

Note the red arrow pointing to the Multicore setting. This should be left OFF for most people. It appears to enable a workaround for some broken power-management features under Windows XP, but there are better ways of fixing that without the side-effects. Very few people wil see a performance increase from the Multicore setting - it does not turn on or off the new multithreading features - but it can overload your CPU and force it to slow down.

I think this thread will go a long way in helping folks get the optimal performance from RW3 for their system. Heck, it almost inspires me to give it a try and update to RW3. *!greengrin!*

Kinda sad that multicore isn't supported right now, but hopefully that'll be in RSC next round of fixes.

I followed the instructions to the letter and definitely saw a great improvement in the way everything looks. But there were some minor trade-offs.

1. A number of my structures disappeared.
2. Some of the structures that remained glow like they're radioactive in night settings.
3. The weather WILL NOT, under any circumstances, stay where I set it. (You know something ain't right when it comes a blizzard in Alexandria, Louisiana in the middle of the summer! Beautiful green leaves still on the trees!).
4. None of my AI trains moved at all.

I finally gave up and deleted ALL locomotives from my route. I put a single engine (no cars) in the Alexandria Yard and "dispatched" it to Winnfield. Went off without a hitch. But when I "told" the engine to pick up a small string of freight cars and then go to Winnfield, it crashed into them in the siding and spilled 80,000 gallons of gasoline. I thought I had read that they had the AI pick up and drop off of cars fixed in this version.

EDIT: I am also getting lockups. Sometimes on startup. Sometimes when I copy and paste. And tonight, I locked up when I tried to change the position of my locomotive from one track to another.

Anyone? Anything?

I believe you must make sure there are no cars already on the engine before you have it pick up others. But i still can not get mine to couple or uncouple.

They do not crash but they do not pickup either

UPDATE:
As of this writing, I can not load the game at all. Locking up on startup. Have verified all files. Restarted computer etc. Really getting frustrated at this point. !*roll-laugh*! !*hp*!

And things were going so well!

UPDATED UPDATE:
OK, here's where I am now.

I can get the game to load, but there seems to be a problem with my custom route. I can load and run all others with ALMOST no problem. Abrupt crashes are still happening regularly. I'm getting lockups and that familiar DING sound my computer makes when it locks up. So far, I have had a freeze under the following circumstances: Double clicked a single tree to check its density--lockup. Copied and pasted a hedge--lockup on paste. Locked up on quit command.

I re-verified all my files again.

I cloned my custom route and the cloned version will open. I used the select tool to alter the speed limit on a short piece of track and--you guessed it--locked up again. I hate to throw rocks but I was having better luck with RW2.

UPDATED UPDATED UPDATE:

Lockup.
Re-verified--5 files failed to load--re-acquired.
Restart.
Lockup.
Re-verified--8 files failed to load--re-acquired.
Lockup.
Re-verified--3 files failed to load--re-acquired.
Restart.
Lockup.
Re-verified--4 files failed to load--re-acquired.

I'm thinking of making a copy of my backup route file and replacing the one in my game file. Or is this possible?

Someone? Anyone?

Are you sure you don't have a virus on that machine that's eating up your files?

Do you have other games from Steam? If so do any of them have missing files?

I'm having the same problem. Can't count the number of times I've verified the integrity and restarted this week with NO SUCCESS. Still getting the error "Can't initialize PhysX" no matter how many times I've re-installed the PhysX driver. I've tried EVERY possible solution on all the TS2012 forums and many, many more on other gaming forums. At this point I'm WAY BEYOND FRUSTRATED !*hp*! I have purchased almost all the US DLC and cannot run the same game that ran just fine before the update. Let's be honest, we have NEVER seen this many bugs in ANY software. It's almost as if they did NO BETA TESTING at all. What's more, I have yet to see a response from RSC on this forum, their Facebook page, or from my many emails. From what I read here and on the other forums, about 50% of us cannot run the game at all or the game has too many bugs to run for more than just a few minutes. I have been a staunch supporter of RSC up until this point, but I have lost my respect for this team. Don't worry, I'm not going to be a trouble-maker, but this is ridiculous. We should not spend more time fixing the simulation than we do running it. Seriously looking at Trainz at this point. At least it works...

Agreed Harry! I would have rather waited another two or three months and get something I can play than to go through this. I too have invested some money and at last count 1,400+ hours.

One difference between you and me is that I am not getting an error message. Mine just crashes.
