Mountain Sub - a couple of questions?

Unread postby scottb613 » Sat Apr 02, 2022 11:42 am

Hi Folks,

Lov'n the Mountain Sub.

I haven't seen a manual.

Is the power lever in the SD35 [pwr] [idle] [dyn] mapped to a keystroke I can add to my controller?

Is there a way to suppress the braking messaging?

What are the policies concerning repaints - is it permitted to improve the original loco textures that came with the route and share same? They could really use some TLC to weather them properly. Chessie and their predecessors weren't the cleanest locomotives around.

Thanks.

Regards,
Scott

To answer your question about re-paints the answer is generally yes unless the author posts that you can't. It's probably in the manual however I'm sure in this case it wouldn't be a problem. The only thing you generally cannot do is modify the model (GeoPcDx) files in any way but any other mods are generally allowed. Certainly doing a re-paint is one of the things done all the time.

As far as your controller without knowing what it is I doubt anyone will be able to help. *!greengrin!*

Thanks!

I’ll take a look in the steam directory.

Hi Buzz,

Thanks for your insights - I’ll see what I can do - I figured out how to get the paints into PSP - reversing the process shouldn’t be an issue.

As for controllers - isn’t the XBox Controller the only official device TS recognizes?

Here’s the controller I’m using - although I’m using an intermediate program to translate joystick output into keystrokes (Joy2Key)… I found the keys in question by trial and error… [i] and [k] for the power lever. Turning nobs and throwing switches is so much more satisfying than keyboards.

In the TS community, when we hear "controller" we think about Raildriver first.

Hi Folks,

So THAT's where the manuals are - a common directory - makes sense - I had been all through the HIS directory and I hadn't found them. A BIG help.

Yeah - been doing this train thing since 01 - never bought in to Rail Driver. I also use Flight Sims so I wanted a device that could be used in both environments. The device I posted is actually made for the Racing Sim community - something I've never tried.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Folks,

Sorry - one more question - I've successfully mapped all the controls for use - they work GREAT.

I have read the manual now.

I love the brakes included on this route and I'll probably have difficulty ever going back to vanilla - however - while the SD35 and GP40 work great with keyboard or controller - - - the GP9 Train Brakes are giving me fits. Even after pressing [ctrl] [shift] [3] to disable detents - the GP9 still has some serious detents that are extremely difficult to overcome with keyboard or controller. Is this an oversight, bug, feature, or gross conceptual operator error?

Thanks.

Scott

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your kind comments -- glad you're enjoying the route. :D

We'll investigate the brake detents for the GP9s. I can't say more because I don't know more at this point -- other than that I could replicate what you wrote in my own sim.

With regards to repaints, I think standard DTG repaint policy applies in absence of any specific rules in the product manual (there are none in ours). So basically what Buzz wrote above. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions about the models I've built for the route.

And on a personal note: weathering is a bit of a conundrum for me. Personally, I would love to do much more with it, but then the more weathered, dirty and run-down your models look, the harder it will be to get them through licensing (and many RRs want to inspect and approve every single model you've built with their logo on).

Cheers,
Michael

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the interest and taking the time to respond.

If you were involved in this epic project - my hats off to you - sir. While I realize I am a bit late to the party - man - what an absolutely gorgeous route. I've been running around just taking screenshots of the scenery - noticing some new detail at every turn. Incredible that you've been able to maintain an exceptional level of detail over the route's full length. While I'm really a steam guy (B&M and LHR) - Chessie is a bit nostalgic since it was the first American route we had for MSTS outside of the really bad Kujo stuff. Second generation diesels are about as modern as I get.

Thanks for the info on paints - if I do anything worth sharing - I'll be sure to check to insure I satisfy any and all requirements before uploading. I was wondering about the unbranded freight cars in the set - I'm sure that's probably licensing too. This hasn't really come up much on the ORTS/MSTS side but you obviously have far greater visibility here.

I'll be sure to watch for anything else HIS produces.

Regards,
Scott

Scott,
You can re-paint anything you want on rolling stock. Again just acknowledge author of the original work. As long as you offer it for free there are no problems. As a matter of fact painting a few cars is a great way get started on doing some repaints. The work is usually easier and the bin files are way easier in general to start to figure out what you need to change to create the new identity for your work.

Hi Buzz,

Thanks for your time and help as well. I see you're a pretty prolific and accomplished painter as well. Nice work - sir. I'll probably be back with more questions - so thanks for your patience - in advance.
*!lol!*

If interested - here's an album of some of my train work over the years. Perhaps - at some point - I could look at porting some of it.

Very impressive, I'm drooling over the Alcos.

Hi...

Thanks - yeah - I like Alco's - with all the smoke they belch - they're pretty close to a steam locomotive. Those models are old payware models - I was really showing off route modifications in those shots - although I did reskin the L&N C420. I haven't made any 3D diesel models yet.
