3DTrains Tehachapi - What Now?

Unread postby Bananarama » Wed Jun 16, 2021 2:44 pm

Hi all,

With DTG's recent announcement of producing their own Tehachapi route, something I'm not entirely surprised at given my lack of participation of late, I've been thinking of what to do with the 3DTrains version. Although I believe DTG's offering will be well received, I don't wish to abandon the project outright, and while it's been long since I've updated the route, I thought perhaps a different approach was needed and I would like to get feedback and suggestions on how to best handle this situation; especially to not leave those who've supported 3DTrains over the years in limbo with a useless product on their system.

One idea I have is to backdate the route, maybe as far as 60 years or so. Except for surrounding buildings, which are relatively easy to alter, little has changed in track arrangements between the 1950s and mid-1990s, and depending on the era chosen (my preference would be with 1st-generation diesels for obvious reasons), minor expansions would be necessary to bring the yards at Mojave and Bakersfield up to par, remove notches from tunnel portals, and change out the scenery to suit. Any new alteration would be stand alone from what I have so far, and the modern version will continue until all bridges, signals and modern scenery are complete.

Thoughts?
Cheers!

Preferably I'd like to see it kept in the 80s/90s. DTGs modern Tehachapi does nothing for me.

Very welcome news that the modern version will continue and if you have the energy to also work on a 1st-generation diesel version then that will be one of the easiest purchase decisions I have ever made.

I'll just keep dittoing here. As long as the route has searchlight signals, the Mojave depot and the Bakersfield depot... I'm good. It's good to see you back again!

Great to see you back Marc :D - your plans sound brilliant and 60 years would be a good time shift,

Would there be an option to extend the DTG version to create what is missing from the current version?

I have never been in the area but from my trips to the US in the 1990s I would like to see the line set in the era before BNSF appeared so you would have all the big railroads

BNSF, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, Union Pacific

Thanks for the support, guys.

I don't know what's missing from the DTG version, but considering there's no mention of the Arvin or Creal branches, those aren't likely to be included, but are in mine, as is the short distance to the Pegasus facility just south of Mojave.
Cheers!

just the custom assets you have created for your route alone have helped me in my route-building process. I love the modern vehicles and somewhat modern buildings. please keep doing what you are doing because I know our 3rd party artists are what keep this sim alive as DTG has left us bottom-of-the-barrel routes as of the past few years. Thank you Marc!

I myself would love to see it back to the Steam era, so one could have Helper Locos grouping together to return to their respective depots.
See Tehachapi 27 from SIAM.
Tehachapi 1927 - Steam operation on the Southern Pacific / Santa Fe joint line over the mountains from Bakersfield to Mojave, including the celebrated Tehachapi Loop. At this time there was even less double track, and almost all trains required helpers, often two and sometimes more. Passenger operations complicate your task, as their time-keeping is critical and they travel much faster than most of the freights. Bonus points can be gained for time-keeping on passenger services. Couldn't have said it better, I second this. The assets that have been created is what makes the route and routes so enjoyable, realism!
