TSXX froze computer, reboot wiped out TS on Steam

Unread postby august1929 » Fri Aug 02, 2019 2:58 pm

Bit of a shocker, but what it didn't do is remove the actual files from the Railworks folder.

According to Steam, however, I no longer had Train Simulator or any of the DLC installed. Spent some time fiddling around then decided to use my now isolated installation as my backup, and do a complete reinstall to a different drive...

Still in the middle of re-downloading TS (approximately 109GB to download before it unpacks into the relevant folders). Total of 10 hours approx download time, then I will be able to install my (now) backup.

A scenario for the Bessemer & Lake Erie route was loading when TS froze - waited for a while - couldn't get into Task Manager to shut the sim down and nothing would take me back to the desktop. Permanent light on the computer suggesting complete lockup, so I opted for a hard reboot - imagine my surprise !**conf**! when I went back into Steam to see Train Simulator greyed out...

Has anyone else experienced this?

Did I have an alternative route to make my original installation accessible through Steam again?

Oh what fun we have...

Did you try to run a file verify?

Before TS19 had the 64-bit option, I always had issue with older DLC for the game, I have no idea why, but I had so many issues with freezing or crashing, and with the help of many from RWA community to try and solve each time I had a problem, and knock on something I haven't had any occur which I am grateful because I thought this game was a goner didn't want that to be the case, but It became so annoying and time consuming trying to fix the issues. Anyhow, I don't know all the DLC that you have, but one thing I did do was , made sure no PONtrack.bin, and even though it may have been time consuming any 3rd party assets or route I did one by one and started the game/ran editor just to make sure all was well, and if anything was an issue, I could pin point what asset or dlc was a problem.

Hope you figure it out. !*salute*!

Thanks Trev - already have. My original post does provide all additional information re what actually happened. With my experience of the Sim going way back beyond TS first coming to Steam and a lifetime of computer fiddling (well, as long as computers were available to your average user) I was more than capable of coping with what happened. I was more concerned to know if there were any obvious short cuts to regaining access that I had missed and, given the hard reboot, if this was a new phenomenon.

I had already anticipated all of Steam's advice, but had to do a complete reinstall to a new HD due to lack of space on my dedicated TS drive - 250GB left out of a 1TB drive was insufficient to allow the 109GB of game + DLC to reinstall - I would have had to move 750GB of TS to another drive first as I would have needed to preserve my original installation...
