Steam is just updating their .NET and directX libraries. It used to be these were downloaded along with every game, but steam a while back changed it so all games referenced one copy in the steam folder. When they update though, all games go through this update. mine was 259 MB or something like that then about 40 games of 0Kb.

Thanks, Drew.

So I better leave Steam to itself for a while doing what it needs to do.

Any idea where to switch off the scheduling? I don't mind Steam updating all games in one session instead of those scheduled nightly updates?

Not sure, I just click the up arrow to bring those scheduled updates into the queue. Mine went through 40 or so games in 5 minutes or less.
