"By September 7, 1969, UP had retreated so much that the City of Los Angeles, City of San Francisco, City of Portland, City of Denver, and City of Kansas City (ex-City of St. Louis but N&W cut service to St. Louis after the Wabash merger) were all combined into one glorious train, the City of Everywhere! (UP never called it this, it’s a railfan moniker) From Cheyenne to Green River, where the City of Everywhere was fully combined, the train reached 27 cars in length and six E-units in an A-B-B-B-B-A lashup unmatched by any other railroad.

As I understand it, both from relatives out that way, as well as from a few other sources, this was pretty typical of off peak operations in the last pre-Amtrak years. One report had it as long as thirty cars on at least one occasion. During holiday peaks, two or three sections would operate along this part of the line. Mail, express, and shorts (local coach and sleeper passengers) would make up one section, with through traffic on the other(s). I had an uncle out that way who rode the line and said these sections were more along the line of fifteen to eighteen cars, sometimes as long as twenty or so, as opposed to the exceptionally long off-peak train.

There was a retrospective on UP's passenger service in Trains many years back that claimed these trains were making money from the wheels up, right up until Amtrak took over. From what I've seen, this claim is thoroughly credible.

I have a UP E8 phase one in my folder I got from somewhere. No ditch lights but then there wouldn't have been back then.
