Steam Workshop + Custom Objects?

Unread postby NorthernWarrior » Tue Aug 14, 2018 2:03 am

Back when Workshop was first opened up to third party routes, one of the conditions was it could not include any custom assets, the route could only be compiled using items from default or official Steam hosted DLC.

Taking a drive along the Oxenholme to Windermere extension to WCML (South) yesterday evening (very nice, too) I noticed all the stations had custom signs which seemed to indicate the position might have been relaxed a bit.

Can anyone confirm if this is indeed the case?

I noticed the past couple of times i've browsed the workshop that there were scenarios that needed repaints that were linked to here.
I also noticed one that needed a VRC loco, not the steam released one.
Frontrunner in the file library now!

Vern,

As far as I know, nothing has changed in relation to 3rd party assets in Workshop since its launch.

What you cannot do is to use any assets from external provider/product folders. For example, my old freight cars that are located in GreatNortherner\Allegheny cannot be used in anything uploaded to Workshop, you would get verification failures when the game checks the upload.

However, what you can do (and could always do) is to use assets from any DLC that is available as Steam DLC for TS. This includes repaints and even custom assets, the uploader only checks for the validity of the product/provider paths.

Cheers,
Michael

Possibly these signs were already in the Windermere section in its basic form on the original WCML South route.

Not to worry, there's here, TS or Trainsim Dev to host a route which doesn't comply with the Workshop requirements.

What's the reason for the workshop not accepting custom assets in the first place?

Probably someone was smart enough to not make the game like Trainz.

The secondary game of Trainz is hunting down some East Elbonian asset on some confusing website after a long search on the Google machine.

Hope DTG continues the exclusion of 3d party assets.

The policy has been relaxed somewhat as many UK WS scenarios now require 3rd party add-ons, eg Armstrong Powerhouse DLC (which you have to pay for) plus reskins from just about anywhere, DPS, SuperAlbs, UKTS, and so on.

It can be expensive now to run some WS scenarios.

Once again, a few too many abbreviations. But nonetheless is this an indication that I may be able to distribute my custom route via the Steam workshop? It contains virtually 100% custom assets.

Yes, you can distribute a route with custom assets. But the custom assets MUST be located in Provider/Product folders known to Steam/Workshop. (For example, any DTG/RSC product folder will work just fine).

However, as soon as only one asset is located in a 3rd party product folder (a folder not known to Steam -- i.e., not part of an official Steam DLC), your upload will fail. So for example, if your routes includes an asset located in a hypothetical folder Assets\NorthernWarrior\Models\ it will cause the upload to fail.

WS Scenario: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/ ... 1476297578 [GJK] 1Z56 1700 Exeter St Davids to Paignton

Requirements:
Payware:

Armstrong Powerhouse
Class 43 (MTU) Enhancement Pack (+branding patch)

Reskins:
DPSimulation
Class 390 VT EMU

Superalbs
Class 800 Great Western Railway
Class 387 Great Western Railway
BH Reskins
Class 68 DRS*

There are many WS scenarios like this some using several Armstrong Powerhouse paware DLC.

Ergo, the asset(s) still need to be on Steam for the upload to succeed.

So if I wanted to use an asset from a Just Trains exclusive route (for example) one they haven't yet shared with DTG, that would still fail.

Harold is right to some extent re Trainz - but the counterpoint is that when building a route I only use items from their DLS which avoids the scavenger hunt around the Internet looking for obscure KUID's or ending up on dodgy Eastern European sites where pressing "Download" is (literally) Russian Roulette as to whether the next screen you see is the bitcoin ransom!

You have lost me - what is the difference between Armstrong Powerhouse and Just Trains?
Both have provided DLC to DTG. But many items of theirs still haven't been "shared" with Steam.
Same with DPS, Superalbs, etc.
In many scenarios there are over 1 AP products required not "shared" with steam!

Sorry Peter, maybe I'm the one getting lost!!

Just so I understand it, a third party add-on can be referenced so long as it is somewhere on Steam.

If I use an object from a Just Trains route previously purchased on DVD-ROM or direct download, i.e. not on Steam or an asset of my own creation, then the upload will fail.

So I'm wondering would I be able to upload (say) a set of custom station signs to Marketplace but as a free item (or token price of 1p or something daft) which would then be recognized by Steam and allow the route upload?

It all seems so much faff compared to just uploading the route here or at Trainsim...
