Rail fans create virtual railway to help real children

Employees and fans of RailWorks 2 Train Simulator, a virtual train driving videogame, have raised £12,500 for UK-based charity Railway Children. Staff at RailSimulator.com, the game’s development studio, worked with fans of the game over a 24-hour period last February to create a brand new virtual railway line from scratch, with all profits donated to Railway Children. Since going on sale online, the virtual railway line – named The Phorum Peninsula – has gone on to raise £12,500 for the charity, all through sales to RailWorks 2 Train Simulator players around the globe.
Wendy Brawn, Communities and Volunteers Manager for Railway Children said ‘The support we have received from the team at RailSimulator has been brilliant. The money has been raised in an innovative way and brought pleasure to those who play the game but, also importantly, vital support to vulnerable children living alone on the streets in India, East Africa and here in the UK. Railway Children would like to express our thanks to Paul Jackson and the team’
Paul Jackson OBE, Chief Executive Officer of RailSimulator.com, said ‘We are delighted to be able to support Railway Children. They perform a crucial role for children around the world, and I am very pleased to see what can be achieved by rail enthusiasts like myself in aid of such a worthy organisation. I am especially grateful to our players around the world, who helped us create this wonderful virtual railway line and who have bought and enjoyed it’.

Hey Derek . Amazing bit of news and having purchased this route I can honestly say now that I have donated to a good cause.

The idea behind it was amazing , as was the finished route. Is there any plans for something else like this ? I am pretty sure everyone who purchased the route would agree that it is a worthwhile cause and would not think twice about purchasing another route in the future

I wasn't even aware of the problem until this charity product was offered. So, in addition to the funds RSC and its customers provided, awareness was raised. Those are the kind of good things that would make our hobby community stand out from the crowd. Thank you, Paul and company and Railworks fans for sharing our good fortune with those who have not had it so well. A world that cares will grow together.

I bought the Forum Peninsula. Although it's not a perfect route it offers a great variety and hey it was build in one single day.
The best of all is the idea to set up a community project to help children.

I hope something like this could be done again in the future.
For example you could release some of UP's "Community Service Locomotives" as a pack and then donate the earnings to the featured organizations:
(I hope you'll do a new ES44AC model someday and then this pack could be realized.)

I like the way they did this one. The railroads were left out entirely from the start. The focus and image at the forefront the entire time was the kids and the organization helping them.

Toy For Tots would be an excellent choice for a U.S. charity. Very good cause and their logo is a train.

Congrats to all involved in this and everyone who bought it. Nothing like a good success story to make the day a little better.
