Amending default files

Unread postby ChuckF » Thu Jan 20, 2011 12:23 pm

Hi All! There has been a lot of changes to default files by freeware people, which means that their modifications will be over-written when Steam does an update. My question is, now that there are so many modifications, how does a person keep track of them? I know that RW can be run off-line, so that updates can be controlled, but eventually most people will want to up-date. Any particular thoughts as to how this can be managed?

Good question. I'm hoping that by keeping a copy of the entire Railworks folder on a second hard drive, that I can always revert to it, or paste it back into RW after an update wipes out all my third party updates. I don't think I have any modified core files, yet anyways.

Hi! I'm wondering that if you overwrite from a backup, you are just fighting with Steam as to what version of a file is going to be used. It might be better to have a separate folder with your downloaded .zip files inside, and then these can be used independently as required. Also, possibly a WordPad or similar file with a list of modifications actually made. I have not made many yet, but I can see where it could be a problem when trying out every freeware modification that comes out.

My main concern is that I don't want to have to keep reinstalling the modification everytime there's an update. That'll get annoying after awhile, ya know?

So, do you have your sim off-line, or do you not do modifications in the first place.? If you are off-line, how are you going to handle a major update if and when the core is modified? This what is posing a real question for me.

I only have one copy of the Sim on my HD and it's online. So right now I don't have a way to keep Steam from reverting the modification. I wish I did.

Hi! What seems to be missing is the ability to re-name default files after modification, so Steam will not over-write. Unless I'm mistaken, this would be the easiest solution, but no one seems to be using it.
