I'm trying to get the opinions of some of the more experienced people here at RWA.

From various posts around the Railworks world, it seems that .TGT, .COST and some other files are not needed in Railworks. Do people here delete these files from the downloads they get?

It's just that with the number of downloads I have for Railworks these files really start adding up.

Can they be deleted?

Up or down

Also,I've seen some posts mention that .PAK, .PSD and .ACE files can be deleted.

What so people here think?

The tgt and cost files are used when you are creating an asset. They speed up subsequent exports of assets to the sim by keeping track of changes. They are not needed by the end user and can be deleted. Conscientious asset creators delete these files before publishing their work.

The pak files are used by the simulator to keep track of assets used in a route or scenario and speed up the loading of the route, you should NOT delete these unless you have manually edited an asset.

ace and psd file are image files used in the creation of an asset, and would not appear in your asset folder unless an asset creator included them in the upload by mistake. Note that a psd file is useful for people making repaints and you would not delete that file if you were thinking of using it to repaint the asset.

You also don't need any .xml files you find in your Assets folder tree. These are leftovers from processing blueprints into .bin's and are usually 2-3 times the size of the .bin file.

Thanks. I was wondering why there always seemed to be a bin and an xml file with the same name included.

BUT in the case of .proxyxml and .proxybin files, it is the .proxybin files which are not used and the .proxyxml files which are.

Go figure that one out.

I run a batch file every time I install something new - this is how it reads:

del /s *.tgt
del /s *.cost
del /s *.bak?
del /s *.xml
del /s serz.exe
pause


If you want to use this, just copy the text including the blank line under 'pause', paste into a text editor, and save it it as DeleteJunk.bat in your Assets folder. Then either run it by double-clicking on it in Windows Explorer, or right click to create a shortcut on your Desktop, and run it from there.

Usual disclaimers - if you wreck your installation it wasn't my fault.

Please don't try this in your Content/Routes folder - that will wreck your installation!

Thanks. I can't believe how many MB's I recovered just getting rid of the .tgt, .cost and .xml files. Thanks for the bat file.

Whenever I bring this up everyone tells me that nobody cares about disk space any more......

Look through enough Railworks packages and you will find almost anything hidden away, including payware shape files - but as you say, no-one seems to care.

I'm an old fart and I still care about disk space.

I dont care about HD space with 3 TBs here, but I cant stand redundant files, it aggravates, so in the end I get mor e HD space too.

I'm still trying to figure out what "HMPT" means. Yep, I'm an old fart, and with only 500Gb on the main drive, I do also care about disk space. RW is really taking up a lot of that of late. But that's OK with me.
