Computer arriving Monday

Unread postby artimrj » Sat Dec 05, 2015 9:55 am

I tried intercepting it between UPS stores here on Friday but no joy, it was still 150 miles away. So it will be here Monday when I get home from work. Since I have no way of doing anything computer wise except getting my email on Kerri's computer I decided to work the weekend. Working Saturday and Sunday will almost pay for it. I love time and a half. 20 hours of work turn into 30 hours of pay.

Then I will have to rebuild. And learn Windows 10, aargh, I was not ready to learn another OS. I also have to see if everything is intact on my old system's HDs. I am hoping to be able to avoid Win 10 but putting my old drives in the new kit. But I have a feeling this will not work and the Win 7 on it is HP stuff.

Hopefully I will be in good enough shape to post all these uploads next weekend. I need email, archive, ftp and graphics software installed to do all that.

It really sucks when you become so dependant on something and it breaks.

Bob - If it helps any, I've been using Windows 10 since it was first released and there is no significant difference in operation versus Win7. You'll get your desktop just like 7, and you'll see a few differences in the Start menu and functions. Otherwise it runs TS2016 just fine. I also play ETS2 and Elder Scrolls V - Skyrim often and I've had no problems. You will need to download some new versions of software you may own, especially the antivirus you use. I run Norton Security Suite that is free with my Comcast sub. If you run Norton you may have to run the Norton Removal Tool:
https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us
This will prepare your system for the Win10 version.
If you have any questions you can post here, or PM me.
Good luck w your new system, it looks pretty boss. !!*ok*!!
Best, !*cheers*!

I upgraded to Win10 yesterday and although the procedure for doing it was flawless and painless, something strange did happen after it had finished. The disk activity was stuck permanently at 100% and everything ran really, really slowly. The computer seemed unresponsive (it would take half a minute just to open or close a window). It turns out that it was the Windows Search Indexer thing scanning all my files and setting up the indexes afresh. After that finished (took several hours), it all went back to normal and the disk activity is now 0% during the time when I'm not doing anything. So, be warned, if Win10 seems to go bonkers just after the upgrade, it's probably that.

Just another FYI. Sometimes the RuntimeBroker will take up CPU but it is not a task that lasts too long or runs after every reboot.

If I am able to swap my old drives in, then it could be sooner. However with the HP tatooing it may not work. I know I cannot install from the HP setup to another unit, but I do not know if it will work already being installed. I disabled the hpsys file long ago. If it doesn't work, then I have to rebuild piece by piece.

Man! Is this thing fast. The 970 took to my HDMI monitor real nice too! Everything is so crisp. I had all my Steam stuff is on a separate 1 TB drive and I was able to put it right in. SO I do not have to download 800 gig of stuff. I got the old c drive connected as well and am copying everything over that I need. Finding my way around Win 10. Turned off the UAC first off. You guys are right it is very similar to Win 7 just looks like a big cell phone screen to me, well that's what it feels like. I can not at this time get sound though. I think it has something to do with the NVidia HDMI stuff that is installed and I am trying to use the Realtech jack in the back.

You may have to go into the sound settings and, or device driver and make sure whatever sound you are using, ie onboard or card are default.

In this window Bob, I've had to remove anything that said Nvidia to get my onboard audio to work.
This is "Sound" found in Control Panel.
