Looking for Steam Loco's (freeware or payware)

Unread postby tg626 » Mon Oct 05, 2015 5:21 pm

I have looked around and no joy. Does anyone know of a loco like the one below, that will work in TS2016?

MSI Gaming 970 (MS-7693), AMD FX-6350/6 Core/3.9Ghz, 16GB Memory, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050, Windows 10 Home 64bit

I don't know of any 4-4-0 American but there's the 1920s 2-8-0 Consolidation that I made ...

There's an open beta upgrade for it here in the RWA file library and that'll be upgraded even more for the release on Steam. to look like this:

I don't know what class of engine that is, but I do know that Dick Cowen here on the forums makes a lot of steam locos.

I don't know if he has what you want, but you might find something else to catch your eye.

There is a 4-4-0 done years ago by (Selkirk Fan) Cecil Kerr that I think resides in the library. If you can't find it yell back. It was done a long time ago so it's not up to today's standard but it is something to work with. Ron Pertuit also did a early Atlantic.

His creations look good, but I've only seen one in game and while nice looking on it's own, it clashed with the art style of the default assets. :( That said, the tender that I saw had couplers that didn't work, and other locos I downloaded were invisible...

Again, the art style clashes with the look today + no bell even tho you can see it on the model (a difference between RW2 and TS2016 I'm sure)

I have to admit the Connie is... odd looking to me (not yours, that's spot on, the real prototype) with it's see thru under belly *!lol!* Still the style looks in step, and the update looks appealing.

One of my gripes with TS20xx is the anemic and intermittent smoke production, Certainly on the default locos and the K4 I bought. Looks like you might have found a way around that tho...

That's the one. An additional, even more recent, update adds a few more enhancements - more cab camera positions and the dense, very realistic smoke (it simulates turbulence and even has cinders being thrown out the stack) isn't available on RWA but should be on Steam soonish (at which point the open beta can be uninstalled).

I'll admit to being particular, but I now have the Connie and I like it! I also like the K4, so I'm curious about where I'd find these mods, especially if there's one that will make the stack smoke appear on every stroke like the Connie does.

Right now the K4 does Puff, Puff, Puff, Nothing, Puff, Puff, Nothing, Puff, Puff, Puff, Nothing, etc... Even at road speeds I get 4 or 5 stokes with smoke, then a few smokeless, over and over. I thought it was a game setting or my hardware, but the Connie has a smoke shot for every chuff without fail.

The Connie has its own special script that I wrote to control the smoke stack emitters (and all the other emitters), whereas the K4s relies on the game's default control of the emitters. The scripting in the Connie is very complex and in the not yet released upgrade for the smoke effects in that screenshot, there's even more scripting to achieve the dynamic effect of swirling, turbulence and dense smoke, while improving frame rates when compared to the old smoke.

If the K4s is missing out puffs now and then, that's almost certainly because the emitter blueprint (Engine_SmokeStack01.bin) needs to be modded, either increasing MaxParticles or changing the frequency at which the particles are emitted. DTG tend to use very low numbers, such as 600, thinking it gives better frame rates, but it's often insufficient and a value of 1000-2000 is often better (otherwise the emitter tends to run out of particles before it's ready to begin the next cycle of emissions) or giving a higher value to EmissionRate. The value for EmissionRate is actually the interval between sending out particles, hence the higher the value, the lower the rate, so by increasing the value while keeping MaxParticles the same, you could get it to pump out particles without running out, although the stream would be thinner.

I've looked in Engine_SmokeStack01.bin and it has MaxParticles=600, EmissionRate =0.009. If it were me, I'd try reducing the EmissionRate value to something like 0.001 to get denser smoke, and then increase MaxParticles to something like 8000 so that it doesn't run out of puff. You'd have to experiment a lot with the numbers to find the right balance.

Joe's mod is a big improvement. I have never looked to see what he did.

I have Joe Nageotte particles mod installed. It did improve much that locomotive. !!*ok*!! But I didn´t like much his result with the cocks flow, so I decided to improve them myself (and also the cab front views to be able to see the tracks).
However the K4 still has that annoying initial isolated puff ball, upon opening the regulator (as if the stack was obstructed !*roll-laugh*!), followed by a couple of stack short smoke streams before start moving.
It has also that initial slippage even in places with a low grade.

But once under way, I believe it is one of the best TS2016 US locomotives to drive (Mike´s locomotives apart).
I have even learned to go uphill from Altoona (at the beginning I always stalled the K4 in the 1.8% grade). There must be possible fixes for traction and other simulation variables. And the downhill runs feel great. !*cheers*!

Here is my K4 cocks open and a pic with the cab front view.
