Horn recommendation for the Alco S2

Unread postby dogmouse » Mon Jul 27, 2015 11:18 am

Hey, rivet counters! :D

What horn would you think is appropriate for use on an Alco s2? Currently, I'm using (by permission) the one from Rick Grout's RS-1. It's not a bad sounding horn, per se, but I'm more interested in using the standard horn of the vehicle of that time, or something close to it, that maybe is already here in the library. I've checked a couple of wiki's , but they're not always accurate.

Your thoughts?

Was there a standard, back then?

Thanks for any suggestions, or direction.

Best,
Rich

Single tone honkers, perhaps even an air whistle in very early units that ran through city streets. Many of these early Diesel switchers were purchased because of city smoke abatement rules.
Comparable to the HH660?

I wonder if there is any period footage about with audio or period sales advertisements with a "feature list".

The railway I volunteer with has an S3 with an amazing 3 chime at the top of the cab. I can find what model it is for you if you'd like. Next time I'd be in would either be Saturday or Monday for the civic holiday excursion.

Thanks you guys, for your comments! And yes, Merciless, that would be great if you can find out what the 3 chime model name is. I'll model a couple more horns to the s2, and go with a 3 chime, if that is the way to go.

Cheers, Lads, !*cheers*!

I'd say it depends on the era, what RR it is, etc. But for the most part I know they had Leslie A-200s and A-125s. As time went on, some may have had Leslie RS/S3ls, Nathan M3/M5s, and today stuff like K5LAs and K3LAs

Based on the model you created, Rich, a Leslie A-200 would be a good match. :D
Cheers!

...then I'm gonna go with that, Marc !!*ok*!! Thanks for the suggestion, that is, if I can find one, or get something close to it. Is it a single chime, or multi?

It's a ugly honker. Single tone. Need three horns on the roof to get a three chime.

BigBoyMoon nailed it first, and as Buzz pointed out, it's a single chime.
Cheers!
