Hello!

Unread postby Upstairs_Chris » Tue Dec 14, 2010 4:40 am

Hello everyone, I just wanted to take some time to introduce myself and ask a few questions.

My name is Chris and I just bought railworks 2 off of steam about a week ago, so far it's great albeit a bit frustrating at times. I grew up as a small boy completely fascinated with trains, as a child my dream job was an engineer. I had model railroads that would rival a grown enthusiasts collection, and had them set up in a pretty awesome diorama in my dads basement. I rode the Stasburg railroad twice, the Cass scenic 3 times, and took a train from Charleston WV, to Lynchburg VA, and D.C. all through my early teenage years by myself many many times to visit relatives for the summer.

However as time went on I quickly lost interest as a growing boy and found what I thought to be, cooler stuff to get into. My mother eventually sold my model railroad collection and I was completely over the interest by high school. Fast forward to 22 years old and whereas I am still pretty young I have quite the busy life. One cross country move and back, joined the Marine corps and trying to get into the West Virginia Police Academy, well, it's not hard to see I am a busy guy. I am an avid Microsoft flight Simulator and well, that's growing old, so I decided to give railworks 2 a try. I spent a long time deciding between this and Trainz. Comparing things like graphics, simplicity of use, and how much simulation was in each. It eventually came down to a visit to the forums where the Trainz forums was pretty terrible with obvious kids who couldn't spell correctly or use punctuation claiming to be engineers or other railroad workers and telling other user's how it was. Whereas I joined this forum at about 4am, and, well I was approved by a nice administrator within minutes despite it being 4am, and we then proceeded to get into a pretty good e-mail conversation. If you've never been to the trainz forums, well, count your blessings. I've been to many forums and this one is pretty spectacular.

I am currently going through the career mode and some particular missions. I am just gonna come right out and say it, I am most definitely here for the steam engines. *!lol!* There is just something about them. I am having the hardest time driving them though, I always have automatic fireman on because I can't even master just the driving yet. I mean I complete the missions with steam locomotives, but mostly always horribly behind schedule while the AI locomotives blasting past me. I've printed out sections of the driver manual but I still am lost. I also don't know what some stuff does. I don't know what sanders, cylinder cocks and small ejectors do. Basically what I am looking for is a nice, down to earth tutorial to get me started. I know this stuff takes time, I cant count the hours of just troubleshooting and learning flight time I have on FSX, and I expect this to be no different.

Also, I wanted to inquire about addons and payware. The steam store has LOADS of top notch quality content, any recommendations? Not just locomotive addons but expansions packs too. I saw two expansions that look particularly good, Project platform: Phorum Peninsula and West coast main line. The list of locomotives I want is quite substantial, most notable the big boy, and the Tornado..mostly because of that one particular top gear episode. However, I am open to absolute every free addon, locomotive and routes that I can get. I know in FSX adding downloaded stuff could be quite difficult, is that the same here? I assume when bought from steam it would have a quality installer, but what about the free stuff on the web, is the quality good? Easy to install? Also freeware recommendations are much appreciated.

I've tinkered with the editor just briefly. Just enough to realize that it is enormously complicated, and I need to watch all the tutorial videos on that to even begin. I have a lot of ideas, but I really want to recreate the Cass Scenic railroad. I know without a Shays locomotive it would be impossible to do the 9% grades but I'll figure something out. Does anyone know if anyone is working on a shays locomotive?

I just realized I made a huge post, and asked a ton of questions so I am going to stop here. Any answers would be greatly appreciated. I am glad that this game is as good as I was hoping it would be and I am also very glad that I found such a well mannered and mature forum for it.

Chris.

Welcome aboard Chris. Hope you enjoy RW as much as I have. I like the Challenger DLC. It has some nice scenarios and comes with a 2-8-0.

Welcome Chris. I would say that there are a few things I would get to start with.
1. RW-Tools...helps to find missing content of routes, etc (payware)
2. ReDem...if you wish to create a route using real world terrian. (payware)
3. RWDecal...uses Google Earth to create decals for placing track,buildings,road,etc (payware)

Steam locos;
Nickel Plate Berkshires by G-TraX ...a 2-8-4...my favorite it is just a great model. (payware)
USRA Heavy Pacfic 4-6-2 by Britkits (payware)

There are some freeware loco also.

Routes;
All the routes by Rich Garber are great.

That's enough for me. Let other add their opinions.

Ah, another Chris. !!*ok*!! Welcome! Lots of questions this morning, eh?

OK, easy stuff first. If you buy additional content (DLC) from Steam, it will install (update) by itself. Sometimes you might have to restart Steam to get the install going, sometimes it does it right away. Now, third party DLC is not automatic, but it's not hard to install. When you download something new (I always download to my Desktop, makes it easy to find for an old fart like me) you will have to unzip or unpack the file. Then, when you open Railworks, at the launch screen, select Package Manager. Choose Install, then browse to the folder you unpacked. Might take 2 clicks before it shows up as a .rwp or ,rpk file. Then just hit Open and it will install. It's really easy after a few times.

I love steam locomotives as well. I have the Challenger, Big Boy, Tornado, Daylight Express, and most of the other default steam loco's and I'm looking at the Flying Scotsman. Dick Cohen is working on a Shay, that will be sweet. But it's narrow gauge, so may need a custom route.

Steam loco's can be difficult to learn. I would recommend running scenarios in simple mode to get used to them before going to career, but that's just me. I use the old HUD (press F4, then F5 twice) for all the info I need. Basically, you let off the brakes, full reverser and regulator. As speed picks up, it will flatten out. Start backing off on the reverser and regulator. I usually end up with 32 to 28% reverser, and maybe 40% regulator. Just keep adjusting until you see the speed top out. Use the Driver's Guide (F3) to see the next speed limit, distance to next destination, and next signal.

I know there are several tutorials out there on You Tube, but I've never used them. I drive by the seat of my pants, so to speak. Kinda like when I was playing MSFS 2004. Good luck and have fun!

As far as freeware, there is a ton of it here in the library, and at UKTS and other sites. If you get the Challenger add on, get Lonewolfdon's free King's Arm Highway route.

Welcome Chris! A shay is in the works... viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1394&hilit=shay ......... and seeing your route background, you might be interested in my project due out in a couple of weeks.... viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1395 ........ and you may have already seen the latest from Michael today that fits perfectly into my plans for the Greenbrier Branch (Durbin Route).

I would be glad to help you get started on Cass when you get to that point with the game. Routebuilding with RW in these narrow mountain hollers can be tricky. My Alleghany Division route includes the first 3 miles of the old Greenbrier so far. With successive editions of the Alleghany I plan to extend the Greenbrier to Renick, then Marlinton. Getting to Cass someday would be a dream (the routebuilding process takes a lot of time). If you should build Cass it would add motivation for me to get there (hmmm, just like in the "old days" of REAL RR'ing).

Sorry... didn't mean to make this sound like it was about me... I just took notice of your history (do I understand you grew up in WV?) and arrival here. Again... welcome. There is plenty of room for another US content maker!
