"by kin3 » Fri Nov 26, 2010 3:08 pm
We need a tip thread. No questions or comments just tips of short cuts, etc. you've learned that would help the new guy and us old guys that forget everything."

So everyone post your tips and tricks here. They should be like for example easier operation in hte world editor.
Everyone post now, let's go! !*salute*!

Useful key-stroke commands for fine adjustments of objects when in the world-editor:

Keystroke J will set the object back to (terrain) ground level.
Keystroke F rotates (fine adjustment) objects anti-clockwise
Keystroke G rotates (fine adjustment) objects clockwise
Keystroke V increases (fine adjustment) object elevation
Keystroke B decreases (fine adjustment) object elevation
Keystroke C moves (fine adjustment) object directly away from the camera view
Keystroke N moves (fine adjustment) object directly towards the camera view

Hi, I am new, but I already have a tip. Buy RW_Tools, well send the guy a donation and get the tool. It has been very useful to me already as a new owner of the game.

Press and release the Shift key once while using any of these keys (except the J) to move objects faster. Also, as in most Windows applications, Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V can be used to copy and paste objects. Press and hold Ctrl to select several objects at once with the mouse.

To prevent your graded track or loft ribbons from "springing straight" into the sky or underground for no apparent reason:

Do not simply add the yellow gradient adjustment markers along the length of your track or a loft object. These can later disappear without clear cause and ruin your gradient work. Instead, cut the track/loft at the point you want to adjust the height. Then click on the gradient tool and the yellow marker will already be there. Adjust as necessary and then weld (or join) the two ribbons. If you click on the gradient tool again you will find that the yellow marker is still there. It will never "disappear" if you follow this method. For best protection of your track and loft objects when routebuilding, NEVER adjust a yellow gradient marker before first cutting the ribbon at that point (cut the previous weld) AND at the first gradient marker in either direction. Make your adjustments and then re-weld/join everything. If you are working with many many miles of track/loft, I recommend leaving a cut every few miles to prevent a mistake in one area from ruining your entire project. Finally, weld those segments together after all other work is complete just before you are ready to test or distribute.

Would like to attach a tip to this tip as I use copy and paste a lot.

Before attempting to copy and paste several objects make sure to save your work before attempting it. While the editor is 99% stable 100% of my crashes have been during copy and pasting procedures involving two or more objects at once.

Isn't it Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V in most Windows apps?

Adding level crossings using Scale Rail road and Scale Rail traffic.

This is what I have found;
0. make backups (I do this by using RW_Tools and cloning the route with a different name (eg. "my route" to "my route dec 30). If something goes wrong then delete "my route" and clone "my route dec 30" back to "my route").
1. make sure the roads are all connected up, all red triangles and no rectangular ones.
2. lay the SR traffic past the end of the road. (so I can find it)
3. raise the traffic loft.
4. place the level crossing
5. lower the traffic loft by using the height adjustment tool (yellow arrows).
6. traffic flows from one end of the road to the other and stops at the level crossings.

if you want a smooth slope for planting trees or orchards, place a road in the center of the area with the gradient set to the slope you want. Once the loft is placed and adjusted to suit, use the grade tool and set the width to the width of the area you are creating, and the up and down slope to 0. Grade as normal and you'll have a smooth sloping area to work with.

one cannot stress out how important that is. There are several methods to do so, yours even sounds a bit better than mine: I just keep a seperate copy of my route's folder everyday I completed something bigger than placing some houses and it saved my a** more than once now.

so again: MAKE BACKUPS OF YOUR ROUTES AND SCENARIOS!!

Centering the cam over any waggon:

You can center your cam (2) over any waggon of your consist.
Just go into cam mode "2", press "Control" and use the "left/right arrow" on your pad to switch through the single waggons. !*salute*!

Just picked up something cool on UKTS, hope it's okay to quote it here:

Just a further little trick for putting the multi part bridges together; I plonk them down anywhere first and leave them aligned exactly as they fall. You can then double click on each component and align them along either the x or z axis as appropriate and adjust them to the same height. Once you're happy with the bridge you can pick up the whole lot by ctrl + clicking on each individual component and move it into the correct position, using v, b, f, g, c & n to fine tune it.

You'll still need some (or a lot!) of trial and error but I find this method avoids creating any kinks and minimises the risk of any unsightly and fiddly gaps within the bridge structure
