UK Buildings Model Pack

The new UK Buildings Model Pack, a free addon, is now available for RailWorks:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/24086

In the editor for the object-set-filter it should be found under:
RSC and APStation (short for Asset Pack Station).

Looks good! Always nice to see some new assets like this for some of us into the route-building side of things.

Thanks for the heads up Don. !!*ok*!!

Well, this one has me scratching my head. I had heard about this while it was being worked on and assumed it was a typical fee-based add-on but instead it's free. So what I don't get is why they don't include that as part of the update system that normally adds stuff to the game. Maybe they will. For a developer it would be nice if they didn't have to include in the readme that the user needed to go download the package. Just thinking out loud...

Yes, you're right. If it's a free asset pack provided by RS.com, then I would think it would make more sense to just automatically include it with an update to RailWorks to help ensure that all end-users will have it (at least those who keep their RailWorks updated). That way, as route-developers, we could help eliminate the extra step and confusion of directing people to first download this pack before installing any route that would make use of any of these assets.
Hopefully some forthcoming update will include this pack to become part of the RailWorks default-assets.

You can see some exchange of messages I've had with RSDerek over on the UKTrainSim forum in regards to this pack:
http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... a&start=15

In which one of his replies says: "I think the pack can be considered default, but users will have to go to steam shop to get it for free, in any route released make sure you put that in the read me."

So, for now at least, it's best to be sure to include to tell users to install this pack in the ReadMe file that comes with any routes that may use it.

The pack has been created to help authors in the new Route Building Challenge which is underway on UKTrainsim - http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewforum.php?f=333 . The assets will be regarded as default and available to everyone, so they can be used in the routes built for the competition.

I assume Railsimulator.com have released it this way because there is no update scheduled for release, and it would take too much time to incorporate this into one. Derek has done this work in his own time, after all, making no extra call on the company resources.

Hi,

The Asset pack is free, but not core.
Just as Port Road is free but not core.

More packs are planned by RS.com and will be announced in the near future, this was however mostly my own idea and work, but released through RS.com.

This was just something I wanted to give folks who like to create, and not for those that like to moan. :)
It took up almost all of my free time for September and I have to admit being very tired by the end with everything that is going on at work too.

I know it is mainly UK stuff, but I hope you can enjoy it all the same.

I am willing to consider a US based pack, but in a couple of months, I have my own projects to get on with.
Images and suggestions welcome, but please make sure to include as many images you can of any asset you would like to see made. The making is easy, the thinking is hard. (especially as I am in UK and do not have the locational knowledge)

best regards

Derek

RSDerek, thank you for your work on this package. I haven't personaly seen what is in it, but any addition that us route builders can use is welcome.

No pics to put up, and i'm speaking only for me here, but I think the top two items that we need for building routes are American styled housing and generic manufacturing buildings. Railroad industries are few and far between here in the states, but houses are seen from the tracks just about everywhere. Plain box-like aluminum sided industrial structures are also ubiquitous here.

Hi again Derek.
I'm a big RailWorks fan and also a route-builder.

If interested to see what I've already made, check out my King's Arm Highway route:
http://www.rryard.com/kings_arm.html
And currently I'm working on a high-speed route called "Western Wildwood", which the terrain, roads and scenery will have a "North American" style look about it: http://www.rryard.com/western_wildwood.html

Of course your efforts are greatly welcome and appreciated I'm sure by many in the RailWorks community.

I understand that making this building-pack was an optional side project that you worked hard on in your own spare-time to give to us end-users and free of charge. So please forgive if any of my comments regarding the pack not being included automatically in an update seemed to be moaning of any kind. No worries, I'm really glad to have these, and any, new assets to work with.
Again my sincere thanks! Keep up the good work. !!*ok*!!

Best regards, --Don.

Here are some ideas for you Derek.

What we definitely need are some small passenger stations:

(Amtrak Station, Vancouver, Washington)

We also need customizable station signs, water and coal points and maybe train detectors.
And round signals:

I hope you can include some of them. !*salute*!

Durand Union Station.jpg

I would like to see this made as far as American buildings. It is the Historical Durand Union Station that's located in Durand Michigan in the U.S

If possible I would like to see it as freeware because I would like to try to build a route based on Michigan, and Durand.

Sincerely jpetersjr

In terms of buildings, what about some Canadian style buildings (stations, freight etc). CN and CP had house styles of sorts so there would be a fair amount of interchangability.
