NKP 765's Original Whistle

Unread postby Railfan587 » Fri Jul 11, 2014 10:38 am

I know that NKP 765's original whistle broke not long after its restoration in 1979. Does anyone know what kind of whistle it was? I watched the dvd Extra 765 West which is from 1980, before the whistle was replaced. In the dvd, the narrator had said that the whistle was a Nathan 5 Chime. But, I've also heard that it was a NKP 5 Chime or a Lima 5 Chime. Also, this whistle sounds really similar to PM 1225's whistle. So does anyone know for sure what is was?

The whistle is a Nathan 6 Chime. Always has been.

Really?! I knew it had the same whistle today, but I didn't know it was the same in 1980. It sounds completely different! I guess the dvd got it wrong. I had thought it used a different whistle in 1979-1980 then was switched to the Nathan 6 Chime after the engine had had its steaming issues fixed. I guess I was wrong, too. So what happened to the whistle? Did the whistle have a crack in it in 1980?

Talking with a few guys at the FWRHS, they said that it was a 6 chime back in the day. I'll dig a little more into what happened to it.

Thanks. I've noticed that you seem to be the only one to have answers to my 765 questions. Could you do me one more favor? Could you go over to this thread and see if there are any other guest whistles you know of that aren't on my list. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=11752 Also, could I an opinion on my sound clips of my whistles?
Again, *!!thnx!!* for everything.

I'm at the FWRHS every other weekend to work on 765, knowing the history helps. I live a matter of minutes from the place as well. I'll be sure to help in any way I can.
