VIA Rail P42 skin?

Unread postby bh762 » Wed Jun 25, 2014 11:05 pm

I recently picked up the P42 during the big summer sale. I've seen a VIA skin kicking around and was just wondering if anyone knows whether it's available or where it might be found.

There is a VIA for the older G-trax version and it's here in the RWA file library. But I don't think there is one for the RSC version.

If this is the one you were thinking of then it is the G-Trak version1.

That's the one I was thinking about. Don't seem to be able to find it in the library though.

Thanks for doing those logos Merlin. What I'm looking for though is the actual skin. I'm beginning to think it was released as part of a payware package at one time, not sure though. If that's the case I guess I'm SOL.

As some of you may know, RSC released a P42 variant in the VIA Rail paint scheme but with no logos. This is because VIA Rail refused to grant us permission to use their logos.

Oddly enough, there's a texture in the VIA Rail folder named GX_P42_VIARailLogos.TgPcDx. The texture seems to have all the necessary logos but the alpha channel is completely black which makes the RGB channels invisible.

Merlin75's plain-white alpha substitution sort of works but I wonder if it could be improved upon. Naww. Probably not. Just idle speculation on my part. I know nothing. Really!
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Lol nice! From my knowledge VIA wont grant permission for logo use unless they get something back out of it like money.

Interesting revelation, this is something recent ? I had nothing but help from VIA 4 years ago when inquiring about TM use and reference material.

That file Rick talked about is the very file I found and used. But due to not knowing how to unblack a alpha channel I had to do something a little different.

It might depend on who you talk to (or rather who they assign to talk to you).

One of the questions I was asked is if it's possible to depict accidents. I said it's possible for trains to derail but that the game immediately stops and no damage is shown. I also said that it's a general policy on fan sites not to post screen shots of derailments or similar mishaps. I guess that wasn't good enough. Must be some people have too much time on their hands. I remember way back when that somebody reported a certain very large railroad was concerned about people using MSTS to learn how to operate trains so they could steal a real one. Never tried that myself.

Car companies used to not allow damage on officially licensed cars in racing video games. Then later on they allowed limited damage. Now it seems they don't care anymore cuz their cars are allowed in games that mangle them. A big reason for the change was because car companies didn't want to be the one brand not included in a high profile racing videogame. Exposure sells more cars than no exposure.

VIA on the other hand has little to gain outside the region it serves by allowing it in a sim. They aren't selling trains, just rides.
