Not sure what you mean by "layer" its one thing to search and replace the references to crossings, or tracks, but if you need to make adjustments to the terrain, or track titles you will see the number of files grow rapidly.

Then you will get somebody who says, oh wait, that tree is facing the wrong way, I need to fix that. In each of the scenery tiles. Can you see where I am going with this?

If you are not concerned then, go for it, but you may want to read about how Styckx was so gently handed by RSC when he tried to do a good honest deed.

You don't need to share route files, you need to share an asset and a canned search & replace... any volunteers to write a little generic search & replace app you can pack with a little script to tell it what to replace?

It would let you do more than just asset swaps in RWTools - you could replace an asset with a couple if you knew how to do it, and maybe offset the replacement asset from the originals position slightly.

I was reading something the other day about how the Unix "diff" and "patch" utilities were written to basically solve this problem. The basic files were copyrighted, so people couldn't distribute modified versions, but the diffs were something that only showed the pieces you changed, and people would hand those around like they were candy. It wouldn't work well for binary files, but conceptually it might work for text files and xml files (there are XML diff/patch utilities floating around that some people use)..

Conceptually it'd work fine; the only issue would be having to install the entire cygwin suite before it'd actually work ;) not very portable unfortunately. The safest bet would probably be to use an existing XML parser, swap your new bits into the tree and then write it all out again; that way might be a bit less error prone.

Bit OT now I guess.

For the crossings at least, it could be done for example SMMdigital changed them on the San Bernardino route.

I ran into a curious issue - when the locomotive is in a snow shed, the exhaust is visible coming through the roof as if the roof wasn't there.

I guess this thread has run its course now, here's the "official party line" on Donner Pass: http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 1#p1503041

Those of you who spent money on it have my deepest condolences.

RSDerek wrote:Donner pass for a new comer is a great bit of DLC,

It contains.

140+ mile railroad line between Roseville Yard, California and Reno, Nevada including the world-famous Donner Pass.
SW1500 Diesel Switcher
GP9 Diesel Locomotive
SD40-2 Diesel Locomotive
SD40T-2 Diesel Locomotive ('Tunnel Motor')
C44-9W Diesel Locomotive

all of that at half price is great value.

Then read that in connection with this thread.

Oh that, but he's not saying anything about the quality of the route, he's saying it and the included DLC provide a good value for 20$. Having bought all of this DLC separately, I tend to agree.
