I thought railworks.exe was just the loader, and railworksproc2.exe was the actual game.

Yeah, that's what I found on my system.

You're quite right once TS2012 opens then railworksproc2.exe appears in the task manager - my mistake.
So there are 3 running processes: steam, railworks and railworksproc all using resources within windows.

Another thing you can do is once in the game at the main menu, you can hit Alt+Tab and you'll be on your desktop and can actually close the launcher window without any adverse effect on the game. *!!wink!!*

I've been testing RW3's graphics settings, trying to find what works best on my computer. One thing I have discovered regards the Multi-core setting. With TSX turned off and no options checked, FPS was 30 at the Low MDL setting [MDL = Master Detail Level, set at the options tab within the game] and 24 at the Highest MDL setting. With TSX turned on, FPS rose slightly in response to checking Multi-core, so it seems to me that Multi-core does have some effect on performance. My processor has four cores; I have not yet used a core monitor to look at how RW3 uses those cores. I am measuring FPS with FRAPS, since the in-game FPS counter will not register any reading below 14.

Tom
I received this reply from Railworks support yesterday:
"You shouldn't need to turn off the hyper-threading in your BIOS and TS2012 uses DX9c still afraid. The mulitcore check box can be checked if you have multiple cores and this will use the cores to tessellate and texture the terrain it loads in."
So it looks like it does have some effect.

Hmm. That tells me that despite RSC saying they were going to off load some of the graphics work to the GPU, the CPU is still doing much of that graphics work. Interesting. I've been running with Multi Core un-checked but TSX on. I'll have to see if multi core makes any difference. I just never tried it.

Over at UKTS forums, several folks have stated that RSC has stated that checking the multi-core box should only be used if RSC requests it.
It's also stated that checking it is most likely only used for troubleshooting problems with certain XP installations.

That being said, I'm only stating what I've read that others have stated that RSC has stated. I halfheartedly checked over at UKTS forum but could not find this statement made by anyone from RSC.

It's quite possible that there's really no need in this post what-so-ever. !*roll-laugh*!

Hawk
I was of the same opinion as you, ie multicore should not be checked (usually) but I asked the Official RW support to clarify and the above was the reply that they sent me. Now it would be interesting to turn on hyperthreading and multicore and see if there is any performance increase??

I like Fraps. Tried it this morning. On Donner Pass pulling out of Sparks RW says 14FPS. Fraps? A whopping 4FPS. !**duh*!!

Great thread on understanding the setting and working from a base that Hawk linked in the original post. It's too bad the UK site isn't as friendly as this one. I pointed out the obvious fact the original topic linked, although fantastic, no longer had the screenshots to go with the descriptions. I was very polite as I have been here and treat anyone's forum as I would want them to treat my own, but let's just say they appear to just want to argue and have 0 time for morons like that. The type that judge an individual by their post count or moderators\admin that get their panties in a bunch over one negative word opposed to the hundred very positive words. It's pathetic to say the least. People don't seem to want to help on some forums, but rather attempt to discredit the OP, for what reason I have no idea. If one of my own moderators that I knew did such a thing to someone I didn't, would get themselves banned. People pointing out "This should be posted here..." also has little merit for my topic, yet it had to be said to make someone feel like someone.

In any event, I checked the source code of the web page and the images that were used were inline attachments. Meaning that they are gone due to that forum changing image settings later and no longer allowing PNG format. I offered to help since I like the topic, but I'm done there. To many wanna be authorities for my tastes.

I'm pretty certain that RailWorks's minimum dispalayable FPS number is 14 so for 14FPS or less you will always see 14.

The Display and Sound Settings are now in game. As for the debugging and other optimization, I think they are only accessible through the command line.
