What I'm saying is, there is zero detail.. No depth of field, no nothing. It's a a paper cut out distance mountain.

And if the trees and houses still just render in birds eye view, with the pretty white non-texture mesh, and watch the texture pop on it still.. It's a moot point. I'm reading it in technical terms.

"Increase draw distance"... Very different from "increased render distance"..

Again.. Just pointing out. No detail.. Even at 9 miles away you'd see some detail and be able to clearly see differences in elevations, tree lines etc.

well then, i guess you could alwayse put steam in offline mode and not get the update.........hmmm, that seems a bit meaner than i wanted it to !!**sorry**!!
I think it is going to be best to just at least wait for the vide next week to make any speculations.

Oh, you're right... I was looking straight behind and to the left of the train and it looks like at full screen I might see some detail there. I'm not a good judge on this topic anyway... except for a few rare winter days, our mountains always look like that.

I clearly said "without hi res screen shots it's hard to gauge the effectiveness"

RSC put these up to create talk and speculation.. I'm speculating.. It's what happens when these things happens. Not everything is going to be rainbows and unicorns that fart strawberries.

Seeing landscape like this will make me very happy...

Clipboard01.jpg

Ya know, was just looking at various scenes around the U.S. on TV all this afternoon... is there anywhere left in this country without blue hazy smog?? I have a feeling they are few and far between. Such as Montana in October, perhaps?

Btw... is the overall brightness/contrast more consistent in these screenshots than we are used to seeing in RW2? I don't see so many of the usual "hotspots" and "black holes"... do I??

No doubt. I didn't want to bring it up yet, but... a new game engine (platform) means new bugs. "Guaar-on-teee!"

I wonder if there will be a beta program?

Much of this is what most have been asking for. I see this as a positive step foward. However, I am concerned what this will do to previous freeware and payware. Obviously some updates would be necessary for engine lighting and rain drops. I hope that payware vendors will provide for free. No mention if the WE has been inproved and more stable. And of course the new graphics engine I hope will handle large routes better.

Actually, if you look to the left side of the picture the hills are starting to turn into a blue haze

I think the soft focus seen in screenshots on distant mountains is absolutely perfect. Personally (everyone's got a different opinion Im sure) I feel that I dont want to see any detail on distant mountains; they're only there to add atmosphere, to add realism in that the landscape 'continues'. I'm focused on the trains and surrounding scenery, not something thats 10 miles away. To me, fine detail at that distance is just a shame; it will only degrade frame rates and playability for no real benefit. Again, this is my take on it.

I think this upgrade to the core program will make the difference a lot of us have been waiting for. This will be great!

Paul, as far as the audio is concerned, are you still going to be using extended machine language and bin files, or are you changing the way audio is read and edited. I have a bunch of new sound packs for the ES44,SD70 and 40.

The background mountains look good to me. Real mountains:
