I'm close to giving up, guys. As much as I LOVE this game, sometimes the toll it takes is too much to bear. And I still don't know what I did wrong. And now my backup file crashes on startup as well. SBHH. *!sad!*

Try moving your "steamapps" folder to another spot on your hard drive, then uninstall the Steam client. Reinstall Steam, then paste that folder back over. I seem to have to reinstall Steam about every 6 months or when they do a big client update.
