Ditch lights are indeed commonly used for crossing but are not restricted to that. On the NEC, ditch lights are used when arriving and departing stations(when on a track that platforms) whether or not the train is stopping there.
Althought the AEM 7 engine in Railworks does not have this feature, Acela Express does. Theres 3 features to its ditch lights:OFF. ON, and FLASH

now when in the Acela express, pressing F turns them on. Pressing F a second time makes them flash. To reverse the process, Hold down SHIFT while pressing F.
If your not sure (while in cab view) whether they are on, left click on the left display screen with the mouse. Youll see a secondary screen with options like TILTING, PARKING BRAKE and HEADLIGHTS. When you first start, HEADLIGHTS will be OFF. Naturally, pressing H will tun them on and you see OFF change to HL. Now if you press F it will change to HL-GL (Ground Lights) which will mean they are on like headlights press F again and you'll see HL-Flashing-GL. The ditch lights are now flashing! To get them back to on, SHIFT+F and SHIFT+F again to turn them off. The horn nor the bell will activate this feature. Its a separate button. Personally, i like to keep them on so all i need to do is toggle between HL-GL and flashing.

BTW, to turn the PARKING BRAKE on and off, press O. The Tilting is the L button.

Thanks for the heads up. I just spent about an hour trying to figure out the ditch lights on the Acela and get some to work on the SD40-2HN. It's pretty complicated. I think it's possible but I'll need to pick someone's brain on how input mappers work. I might have a look at the P42 and see if it's any different.

No problem!! If anyone is interested, i wrote up a little guide in the Steam RW forum about the Acela Express in-game that i can post here in RWA. Ive only been at this game less than a month and already learned quite a bit just messin around with it based on what i know about the actual train.

Yeah post it! It's amazing how many of us have completely overlooked features of new content because we're too excited about playing with our new toy to read the manual.

Do the ES44's have secretly flashing ditchlights?!

Dang! I wish we could add them to each loco repaint seperatly. Like, flashers to the CSX and NS ES44's, and solids for the BNSF, UP and CP's.

the part about the stations is true. It is because like crossing signals have there flashing red light and bell so does the train flashing being the visual warning and the bell the audio warning (along with the horn) its done to say they have tried every thing to prevent an accident

20 MPH is only if there are no ditch lights at all. Many UP and BNSF ditch lights don't flash.

Out here where I'm at, both BNSF and UP don't have flashing ditch lights. They just have bright as sun lights, bell and horn I can hear two miles away. In my area, they are also restricted to 20MPH. Going thru residential area. Some ungated crossings, too.

I have never seen ditch lights flashing on UP here or on CN.

There is a whole thread on this from a couple years ago. It was a good discussion and covered how the Class I roads work.

As do NS and CSX without flashing headlights.

If you would read the comments you would find out that this is a ex SP unit. The ones UP buys do not have flashing ditch lights. I see them all the time.
