After seeing the recent security breach notice, I tried to change my password from my logged in steam program. It would not let me, kept telling me it was unable to process my request. I then tried to log out, and log back in (with the password I had written down as being the one I used for my account). It told me it was invalid. I then tried to reset the password with both the lost username and lost password functions. It continues to tell me that the secret question answer is wrong, when I know for a fact that I'm typing the correct answer. I'm also getting a response sometimes that steam cannot connect to the servers.

So in other words, I have no way to log in, and no way to reset my password. I opened a trouble ticket quite a while ago, still no response yet.

I dont know whats up.

EDIT:

According to the contract, it seems if support doesnt respond, I'm simply 'out of luck'.

Shame on me for not reading this more closely ahead of time. Why would anyone want to wrap up this kind of money here? They directly say they're not liable regardless of what happens, they dont guarantee virus-free programs, and they dont guarantee secure operation or account security. See below, black and white:

"B. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY.

NEITHER VALVE, ITS LICENSORS, NOR THEIR AFFILIATES SHALL BE LIABLE IN ANY WAY FOR LOSS OR DAMAGE OF ANY KIND RESULTING FROM THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE STEAM, YOUR ACCOUNT, YOUR SUBSCRIPTIONS AND THE SOFTWARE INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, LOSS OF GOODWILL, WORK STOPPAGE, COMPUTER FAILURE OR MALFUNCTION, OR ANY AND ALL OTHER COMMERCIAL DAMAGES OR LOSSES. IN NO EVENT WILL VALVE BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, SPECIAL, PUNITIVE, EXEMPLARY DAMAGES, OR ANY OTHER DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF OR IN ANY WAY CONNECTED WITH STEAM, THE SOFTWARE, MERCHANDISE THAT YOU ACQUIRE VIA STEAM, ANY INFORMATION AVAILABLE IN CONNECTION THEREWITH, OR THE DELAY OR INABILITY TO USE MERCHANDISE OR ANY INFORMATION, EVEN IN THE EVENT OF FAULT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), STRICT LIABILITY, BREACH OF CONTRACT, OR BREACH OF VALVE'S WARRANTY AND EVEN IF VALVE HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. THESE LIMITATIONS AND EXCLUSIONS REGARDING DAMAGES APPLY EVEN IF ANY REMEDY FAILS.

IF YOU ARE A RESIDENT OF A EUROPEAN UNION COUNTRY, THE ABOVE PARAGRAPH MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

C. NO GUARANTEES.

VALVE DOES NOT GUARANTEE CONTINUOUS, ERROR-FREE, VIRUS-FREE OR SECURE OPERATION AND ACCESS TO STEAM, THE SOFTWARE, YOUR ACCOUNT AND/OR YOUR SUBSCRIPTIONS(S)."

Good luck.
My old Steam account was (probably) hacked a couple of years ago and was banned (no idea why).
I lost access to the two games I purchased.
The procedure for getting them back included scanning the serial number on the box.
I had thrown away the box years before.
I never got an answer from Steam support.

I had the same can not connect to steam problem earlier when I tried to start RW. But I connected fine without any problems a little bit later. I'm sure it'll sort itself out in the end and you'll be able to get back in fine.

Wow, there's something wrong...

After about 15 or 20 login attempts trying all kinds of old passwords...out of frustration, I typed the password it should have been, and it logged me in...!

I then tried to reset the password, using the same password, and it said it was invalid, and logged me back out. **!!bang!!**

I found Gabe's email address after a google search, and sent him an email...might be jumping the gun on that one, but I'm not going to wait a week to hear back from support (if ever).

Question - are you trying to login into steam via steam or via your browser? For example - when I go to Steam on firefox it says 'not logged in' but if I start steam I am logged in.

Through the program. For some reason, its letting me in, but when I try to change the password, it kicks me out again. I'm going to try a system restore...

Sorry for hijacking this thread - hopefully I hear back from support.

Still no response from account support, but now its working again all of the sudden. Password changed successfully. So there must have been something going on in the servers/client software....

I think I'm going to keep steam in offline mode for a while until this all calms down!

Took me several tries to change my Steam Forums password. Just be patient, y'all. Think about the sheer number of Members now all trying at once to not only connect to get their "Steam Fix" but then all those changing passwords! The system has to be at the point of overload. Give it a little time to settle down.

I confess, I'm one of those complacent dummies that uses (well, used to use) one "really good" password for everything. I have not seen any damage at all from the Steam hack, but that doesn't mean they are not laying in wait. I need to look into one of these password programs that y'all have posted about. For now, tho, seems all is well. For now. !**conf**!

Remember when someone was trying to break into our accounts by guessing our passwords?

No problems changing password on Steam , Pay-Pal, or cancelling my bank card (grrrr). Seem a little extreme?

This is the sixth time a company i've dealt with has "lost" customer information. I wonder if Steam will have the class to offer free credit-monitoring like the other companies i've dealt with have done?

As far as AES encryption being used by the government goes, I read a few days ago on Yahoo news that some of the top brass at the Pentagon are recommending that we don't start any major wars because China and Russia may pull the plug on our military technology ( as in hacking ).
