note that the Acela Express has fully functioning screen displays.

What is the actual purpose of that SW10, the Hunchback of Laramie? Is it some sort of mini-roadswitcher or a capital rebuilt by Uncle Pete himself?

Reppo wrote:Hello all,
I have a question, what is the utility of the strobe light in the sw10? when does the driver turns on this light?

Thanks in advance. !!*ok*!!

Best regards.

Hi

Is nobody going to (or is nobody able to) answer Reppo's question?

Seems like now is the time to have a discussion about it rather than when the loco has been built and everyone decides it's wrong. !*don-know!*

Cheers

I have seen them on when they were running in yards.

Many thanks. So its basically just a warning light.

For what it's worth I think it looks like the guys are doing an excellent job with the scenery, and I'm still very much looking forward to seeing the route for real.

Cheers

Strobe lights were tested before ditchlights became mandatory as a way to make a locomotive more visible. Look at photos of western railroads in the 1970's through to the 1990's. You'll see strobes of all sorts. As for modern day. Any remote control locomotive is required to have strobe lights above the cab windows on both sides. And switchers (like the SW10) still feature them as an extra safety measure.

The SW10a were re-motored and refitted SW7/8/9s done by UP themselves. The originals looked like the ones PapaXpress and I did.

Utah rails has a good article on them. http://utahrails.net/articles/up-sw10s.php

...After considering its possible options, Union Pacific chose to rebuild the sixty-five remaining early EMD switchers (twenty-two SW7s, thirty-six SW9s and seven TR5As) into a new switcher model, later designated as the SW10. (The program was first referred to simply as the SW7/9 upgrade, with the decision to call them SW10s coming in about September 1979.) These three models, the SW7, SW9, and TR5A, were selected for the rebuild program since all were similar in most details, and were powered with 567B and BC engines which could economically be overhauled and upgraded to 12-645C engines using new 645 power assemblies. Very interesting information, and that link is fascinating. Thank you.

I'm interested to see what can be done with this -
The SW10s all had a bone-jarring ride, and had speed restrictions due to the unsprung trucks.

There is an interesting ground texture to the left of the rails. Dirt with stones? Does this already exist, or could it be new?

The texture looks like one of the old unused ones from Rail Simulator - the .tga files for which are in the Assets\Kuju\Railsimulator\Environment\Terrain folders (both RS and RW).
Cheers!
