Does anybody know how the verify integrity of the game cache actually work??
I have observed the led indicators on my router and cable modem leds... during the first part of the verify (the progress bar from 0-100%) there appears to be NO communication between the steam client and the Steam cloud. The only activity I can see is after the progress completes and Steam determines that XXX files did not verify that the files are downloaded from the Steam Cloud thence re-installed by the Steam Client.
So one might ask is what is the Steam Client doing during the initial part of the verify??
I believe that the information it using to do the verify is contained in the steamapps folder... the *****.ncf files which there is one or more for each item purchased/obtained from Steam. I don't know what these files contain or used for but could hazard a guess that they contain some information/data about the actual game files... ie checksum, character count, size, you name it.
If these files are somehow corrupted the verify can't hope to function properly.
There are alot ifs and ands in the above hypothesis and it is probably badly in error.
Just a WAG on my part.
