True, but it’s extremely basic that way. You would still have to make all the different layers yourself to get grime, dust, rust, paint chipping and so on. Then play with Gaussian blur, transparencies and the lot. My guess is there are at least 5 layers on top of the basic repaint, apart from the darkening layer.
The upsetting part is that RSC actually does have the paint kit ready to roll! Some artist working for them did this UP ES44 repaint in Photoshop, PSP or whatever so it must exist (should he have deleted it, he should be fired immediately

). It's just a matter of whether RSC wants to make it available to the public or not.
What strikes me in the train sim world, there are hardly any paint kits around from whomever it is. In the flight sim world there are plenty. PMDG, Aerosoft, RealAir, all the big sellers of add-on aircraft have them available for download from their websites… As far as I have been able to determine NONE of the RW pay ware add-on producers/sellers even have the slightest trace of paint kits available. If we start kicking shins here, we should kick not only RSC’s! 3D Trains, G-Trax, etc. are all of the same caliber when it comes to that. It almost seems like paint kits are the biggest treasures around in rail simming. Like kids with a favorite toy: ‘No, no, it’s mine! You are not going to play with it! And if you start to bugger me about it I’ll tell mummy..’
I’m pretty sure that making a paint kit available will sell more of the model. Take the ES44. Surely there are people around that cannot swallow UP, they want 'their' RR ES44 (silly but within human nature, I have nothing against UP. It's just that being Dutch, BNSF orange appeals to me more

). If they or someone else can do the repaint, they’ll buy the whole Sherman Hill lot just to get this GEVO (I did!)… If it’s only UP they can get, they won’t.
Trouble here is that we cannot expect RSC to produce a repaint for all the railroads out there, they’d be paying an arm and a leg on royalties. Freeware repainters shouldn’t have that issue to deal with. I say should, because you never know… American Airlines went for the butt of some freeware repainters at some stage, they didn’t want to see their colors in flight sims, go figure! KLM has copyrighted colors, don’t use the exact same shades of blue, you’ll be in trouble.
So, cutting the long story short, I don’t think we’ll ever see a repaint kit from any of the payware add-on producers. They seem to be too egotistical. We’ll just have to do our own and that translates into someone putting in some (as in lots of) time and effort. Well, anything to keep the crowd happy!
