At 2 AM I posted that I was having shadow issues with the Gtrax locos and some rolling stock. After reading others posts,I realized I had not yet engaged the new TSX graphics engine. All my shadow issues went away. Still fps between 30 and 50. However it does seem the cab-views in the Gtrax locos are broken. I do like the cab sway in the steamers, and the GP 9,as a former conductor on a rough-tracked short-line. I have an AMD quad core at 3 ghz and an Nvidia Gforce GTS 450,and it is running beautifully.

(edit) Minutes after this post I went to the Gtrax site. They have an update in the works to repair these issues, and add the new features!

On the subject of load times, I think RW3 is tampering with them. My route took nearly twice as long to load for the first time. Subsequent launches see to be faster. I know that something has changed because I am seeing SBHH along part of the route which was not there prior to the upgrade.

I'll be digging though the route files to see if I can prove this.

As for performance, I am seeing pretty good frames (no stuttering) but it is slower than before (sorry I can't get numbers, I just can't seem to get my EGA utils to play well with RW3). CPU usage is about 70~80% even on both cores even with the flag turned off.

Just as I had suspected, its the shadow geometry thats killing performance. If you keep everything else high, and turn down the shadows, it helps a lot.

As a test, I turned OFF the shadows completely, and checked 'low detail' shadows option, and now everything is right back up to the normal RW2 framerate, but keeping all the other graphical goodies like lights.

Yeah, its a trade off, you lose the beautiful high detail shadows...but, at least its an option for some.

Has anyone tried Game Booster? I'm gonna download and tweak around with it. I'll report back later on.

Hmmm, turning Shadows on low, and turning on "low detail shadows" did help with performance. However, I'm still getting a performance hit.

Specs:
Wins 7 64 Bit
Phenom II X4 955(3.2GHz)
4GB DDR3
1TB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 (1 GB)

I know that I should probably upgrade my video card, but I can't afford that right now.

I think I'll just keep on tweaking it.

The GTrax locos are the same - but the cabview is in the front wall of the cab.

I can confirm the GTrax issue on the Berkshire (and Kanawha repaint); cabview is in the front cab wall.

Try turning shadows off, and leave the low detail shadows on. I got an extra 10fps.

So I think this might be the key. With dense scenarios, I can turn the shadows down. With one-train scenarios through the desert, I can keep them around medium.

Just noticed that Steam released a new game for today...so hopefully it wont be long before they kick out Horseshoe Curve, too.

And Tori; Thats a shame...but I guess...it is easily fixed with some playing around in the cab files.

Are you all aware off the fact that "low detail shadows" will slow the game down?
As I understand it, it adds more shadows to the environment, but of lower quality.

Did some more experimenting:

I turned off the new TX engine; all other settings the same with multi-core On, all settings maxed (both on launch panel and in-game detail settings); re-ran earlier fps test. No noticeable change; camera 1 is still 19-20fps but jumped to 21-22 by turning off HUD display. Camera 2 is at 16fps. No stutter.

Rebooted PC; TX still off; all settings same as above; camera 1 now at 21-23fps with peaks at 25; turned off HUD, no noticeable difference this time (???!). Camera 2 at 18fps. No stutter. Satisfactory video performance (saw occasional 14fps drop but not apparent in the animation).

Getting the Horseshoe curve right now.
I am not really a total performance freak when it comes to games but I am going to follow a few suggestions provided here in the forums.
I am happy with the new release.
