Mostly the random failure is with AI trains and the worst is when the lead engine goes dead. The next AI down the same path appears not to recognise that the block ahead is occupied an crashes into the stalled train ending the scenario.I think this is a failed feature and should be eliminated.
You can pick good and bad engines in the scenario editor. Swapping bad for good engines will prevent AI trains from stalling. In player trains, the lead engine is usually good, it is some of the trailing engines that suddenly die on you. If you're lucky and driving from the outside you can hear the alarm bell sounding in the Dash9 that is dying. Of course, in properly designed models you have an indicator in your cab display signalling your train has a malfunction, but RSC so far didn't bother with this. They put enough engines on the train to allow you to drag the train over the mountain, probably just like real SP did.
