Like I've said, I don't have NEC. But I just ran the Champion scenario on HSC. What a delightful route that is, by the way. LOVE those long trains!

Anyway, my point, is that it's a 2012 track with all the goodies. This scenario has snow and I used lights and there are lots of other long trains running, with lights. I spent the vast majority of my time at my 30 FPS lock (29, actually, it seems to say). I didn't actually keep the frame counter running (it bothers me). But when I would check it occasionally, there it would be sitting at 29, or at least the mid- to upper-20s. There were a few slow downs, but not many. Only one got kind of slide-showy, and upon checking, I saw the dreaded 14FPS. Oddly, that seemed to be in an area without obvious scenery demands or other trains moving nearby. It seems that the 2012 TSX improvements can be run at good performance. Perhaps NEC and the Acela just need to have their optimization optimized to HSC standards.

By the way, where's the heating switch? All that snow got me feeling cold! *!!wink!!*

You are meant to put your hands around the back of your PC extraction fan to keep them warm. :)

Old Prof wrote:Wouldn't RSC be much more likely to notice it were it sent to them rather than to a users' forum? Although it's clear that RSC employees do monitor various RW-related forums, they have no obligation to do so and, given the mountains of comments appearing about RW3, probably cannot keep up with the forums as well as they can with their owh support site. You're quite right in citing Griphos' post as very thorough and potentially useful. I just hope that he sent it to RSC, too.

Seems like it may be the way to go if it's what would get performance raised higher on RSC's agenda, particularly in light of RSAdam's comment that they're "not seeing a flood of emails in support noting huge performance drops in the NEC route".

Support was not my first port of call in reporting my performance woes because with issues as non-specific as this, chances are you end up mired in a laundry list of things the developer gives you to try, and waste hours on tedious, unpaid fiddling with no satisfactory resolution - past experience makes one avoid inviting more of that. It's not the kinda problem where you shoot off an e-mail and they get back to you with "thanks, we've found and fixed the bug!".

One other frustrating thing is there's no standardised benchmark for comparisons in this game, so if someone says the NEC runs pretty smooth for them, it's impossible to know from that whether the game is actually performing much better on their system, or their subjective impressions are just reflecting a greater tolerance of lower frame rates and stuttering. And I found keeping an eye on the in-game frame rates was very inadequate - it wasn't until I ran FRAPS and charted the results that I saw an objective pattern that seemed to match what I was experiencing while playing.

BTW, if anyone else would like to complete an NEC scenario while recording their frame rates with FRAPS, but doesn't know how to create a chart or have the time to do so, just send the results to me and I'll do it :D

All you need to do is download and run FRAPS, and in the "99 FPS" tab make sure FPS is checked under Benchmark Settings. Then load the scenario, hit F11 to begin FPS logging (the frame rate counter will disappear) then hit F11 again at the conclusion of the scenario to end the logging. There will be a CSV file in the FRAPS directory (e.g. C:\Fraps) with the results. Just be sure to takes screenshots of or note down your TS2012 graphics settings.

You mentioned your CPU overheats?

I do not know if interested, but I use SetFSB to overclock the freq and get the CPU to clock to 3.05 Ghz. Stable and helps with TS2012 a bit. I also installed one of the Seagate Hybrid 500Gb drives and with your tip on the AV exculsion, it really helps load times, etc.

Also, do you have the G73Jh with the HD 5870 or the GTX 460 model?

Do you find the laptop cooler really helps?
