Caution: Issue with Today's RW or Steam Update

Unread postby GreatNortherner » Tue Jul 09, 2013 6:45 am

Hi,

Please see this before launching Steam and Railworks today if you haven't disabled the automatic updates for RW:
http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 1&t=132932

There is a weird bug that causes hundreds of repeated "first time setups" after getting the update.

EDIT: Just launched the other game that I have on Steam (Civ5) and it did the same thing... so this seems to be an issue of the Steam client rather than RW.

It is a Steam client update rather than anything directly TS related; it seems to me that it needs to re-install DirectX for every game you have installed after restarting; i.e. the more games you've got, the longer it will take (I'm just speculating here, but that's what it looked like to me; I have 11 games installed on Steam at the moment and the DirectX setup had 22 stages, so that's the 2 step DirectX setup repeated for 11 games).

I'm not sure if there's an option to postpone Steam client updates or if you just have to bite the bullet and get them over with

Steve

EDIT: Scratch that, it seems it needs to perform the whole first time setup routine on each game when you launch !!bang!!

It loads directx9 but there are 108 items in the count. Very slow. Locks out whole PC at times.

I figured out this morning to delete the "ClientRegistry.blob" file.
Something got messed up in the file. Deleting it will cause Steam to rebuild it and viola, no more repeated updates.

It amazes me how many people in the other Railworks forums have decided this is normal, even though Steam should not be messing around with DX9, Visual C++ or even stranger Adobe Reader.
Yes, one of the "repairs" was Adobe Reader. (Flash Player)

Nice find Eric. Glad I am at work so I am not sitting at home trying to figure things out ;)

No need for paranoia.

Anyway, always look on the bright side. !*lho*!

Happily it turns out that killing the Steam processes in Task Manager and then re-launching is OK, as long as you say NO to the Windows UAC question. :D

It was touch and go for a while there. I almost had to spend some time with the wife! !*hp*!

What really iratated me was that I was offline and steam started the download. I cancelled but the download went on and installation started. 252 steps mostly for visual C++. It took 2 hours and 15 minutes for one game I have on steam, namely trainsim. I do not like third parties "repairing" C++. Did this overwrite the MS security update from MS a few monthes ago? Not very happy with steam.
