Rollingstock Physics:So Bad It's Annyoing

Unread postby pschlik » Wed Feb 29, 2012 6:52 pm

It annoys me how all rollingstock (without an inside view) tips over way to easily. It's not realistic that they tip over extremely easily, speaking of vehicles of interiors, I could have a train with coal cars and a caboose at the end and the coal cars would tip alot on any corner but the locomotives and caboose would tip over the same, small amount because they have interiors. The bad part is that no matter the weight of the vehicle, if it has not interior, it will tip with ease. Another bad part of this is that when a train tips, the wheels clip the track, because the tip axis is in the middle. They probably won't even try to fix this until they start devloping Railworks 4 but you know...

*I'll try to get screenshots*

Well the point of the game is not to tip over anything. If you are derailing off the tracks in a turn it means your going way to fast in corner, the game is modeled after simulation of real life, not an arcade game. If that is not what you mean, then we may need a better understanding of what you are talking about *!!wink!!*

I know what he means. He's talking about how much further heavy cars lean. Coal loads will lean real hard in a corner at 40 while the caboose, will remain much more upright. It all has to do with centrifugal force and such. The tender on the K4 is a good example, it leans strangely into any tiny curve on my routes, not sure if any others are experiencing this.

I also get excessive lean on most cars, not realistic at all. I sure would like to know how to fix that.

the only time i got excessive lean on a coal train was taking a siding on a tight switch at 60Mph - scared the heck out of me but the only lack of realism was not derailing

You can try and make the bogie suspension stiffer - that'll be in the bogie blueprint - and move the bogie pivot points ( that will probably do it, thinking about it ). Bogie pivots are in the wagon blueprint, you want to fiddle with the Y value. I know what he's talking about too, but that's far from the worst :p

There's something a bit odd about bogie pivots, I've not quite put my finger on it. You get more outwards body movement the higher the pivot, which doesn't actually make much sense if it really is a pivot. I'm thinking the roll point is at rail level and the Y value * the mass defines the outward moment, the only thing my currently tired brain can figure out.

Well, something odd happened, sometimes it happens with the last car on a train, it tips slightly, but this put a whole new level to that. And darn, I don't apper to directly be able to put a picture up..

This is fascinating. I have never seen any of this. What cars are doing this?

If you move the train a full car length, do they tip to the other side?

... bizarre...

Well, they just stay tipped as if gravity is wrong.
