NEWB - kind of - a few questions?

Unread postby scottb613 » Wed Mar 23, 2022 10:38 am

Hi Folks,

I'm an Open Rails guy just poking around. Took advantage of the March Madness to get some content and give TS2022 an earnest try.

Is TS still viable?

It seems like everything I'd be interested in is closed up. Started with the RS3's I watched a video on - the respective store has no products available - then moved on to Searchlight for what have been proclaimed as the "Best Diesels for TS" - they show "Out of Stock" (LOL - someone has a sense of hunmor). So that was a bit discouraging.

On a more positive note - picked up Clinchfield - I'm a sucker for coal haulers - after adding the Rail Car Sounds and sound mods for the Geeps and F Units (big difference) - it seems pretty nice. Question - is there a good sound mod that's easy for a beginner to improve the SD40's as well? I saw there is a good SD40 sound pack for TSW2 - I'm assuming they are not interchangeable. Is there a mod for sounds on the Clinchfield route to add sounds to the coal fill operations?

Thanks...

Regards,
Scott

Yes

If you mean the Diesel Workshop RS3 have a look at their Facebook page - they seem to have some problems with the sounds included with one of their products and the withdrawal of this being for sale seems to have spread across their website

I'm afraid not

Not yet simple...have a look at

The RS3 is unavailable temporarily because of some ego hassle over the sounds used and should be back shortly hopefully. I'm not sure the status of Searchlight locomotives but again they will be back as soon as they get some technical glitches straightened out. The best sound for the SD40 by far and away is Searchlights and is available on their enhancements section. You are correct that TS2 and TS2022 are not compatible.

They managed to get the open source audio deal figured out, the main issue right now is them, ah, "borrowing" some audio from ESU, who make decoders for DCC models. Not sure where they stand with that right now, the last I heard was that ESU was probably just going to ask Diesel Workshop for compensation and to not use their audio in DW products going forward.

They're a German company that sells audio modules for model trains. This includes both the physical hardware and the audio files for them, which is where Diesel Workshop decided to get some of their audio from without asking permission first.

Basically exactly this. No idea if central Jersey railfan and diesel workshop have arranged anything though so I will have to ask him

Hi Folks,

Thanks so much for the informative posts.

Hah - Rod I recognize from all the gorgeous ORTS screenshots you've taken.

I'll look for the Searchlight SD40 sounds - while I've poked around a bit - I haven't figured out where the Clinchfield SD40's actually reside in the directory hierarchy yet.

Sorry - why are the Searchlight locomotives not available - are they gone for good?

Regards,
Scott

Hi.

Thanks - from an outsider point of view - I've always heard the physics are the weakest link in TS - I'd like to try the BEST locomotives to see what's possible.

Appreciate everyone's help.
:)

I'm a little confused (what else is new). Is there some issue with a free offering of the sound for the RS3 that's causing a issue or is that sound from this ESU outfit and was used without permission? Or is this about some other locomotive? Can someone help me out?

Jeepers :D ...and here was I thinking I was hidden *!lol!* - thank you very much for your kind mention Scott.

Stick with the sim if you have the stamina - it totally repays time spent digging around.

If things ever go wrong, the first port of call should be here or even over at UKTrainsim. It is ok to look at the Steam forums but beware of any general advice given there until you are confident that you understand the consequences of your remedial action. There is a tendency to advise verifying your files if there is a problem, which is fine if your installation is vanilla - if not, you could lose a lot of mods, addons etc.
