IIRC F7B units had Steam Generators (Boilers) which were used for heat/air conditioning on passenger rolling stock. Electrical power for these cars was provided by batteries on most cars, some these cars had had generators that were driven off of the axle of one of the wheel sets.
I do remember that in the late 1960s/early 1970s on the Daylight trains powered by SP 3200 class SDP45s; if the train length exceeded 7 cars a F7B was added for 'boliler protection as the smallish boilers on the SDP45s was only sufficient for 7 cars or less.
