AllAboard routes (except Rascal - Cottonwood) very poor frame rates..

Unread postby USRailFan » Thu May 31, 2012 3:28 pm

My computer is pretty far from optimal to run Railworks on - it is an emachines laptop with a T3300 CPU at 2 GHz, 4 gigs of RAM and a built in Intel Express graphics chipset. Still, it runs TS2012 rather smoothly without TSX at the lowest graphics settings - usually. The exception is every All Aboard route, except Rascal - Cottonwood. These routes run like a slideshow, both from the cab and in the outside views, even at the lowest detail level and with TSX turned off. This is a bit of a mystery, especially as Rascal Cottonwood runs so smoothly. The only thing I can think of that could be causing this, would be 3DTrains' Scalerail, which is not used on Rascal - Cottonwood. Is Scalerail really such a resource hog, or is it just because of my admittedly low-spec graphics?

My Machine barely meets game requirements and I have no problem with any all aboard routes and I have them all

Shouldn't be a Scale Rail issue, as Scale Rail is used extensively in RW's routes. It could be scenery and the way it's planted in tiles/ density. I have no problems with any of All Aboard's routes, but I do have a high end PC. Very high end, and it will still struggle on some routes.

Yeah, this is a mystery. I have a very good machine and can run all other routes, even demanding routes (WCML, Woodhead, PT, etc), just fine at high settings, but Ohio Steel brings my machine to its knees. Some say that it runs fine for them, and others find the same results you and I do. There are a number of threads on it on various fora. I've corresponded with Rich trying to figure out what the issue is, but no setting in the sim allows me to run that route. Even in the countryside I can only do about 18 FPS. In Dover yard, fogetaboutit! Something like 6-8 FPS at the lowest settings.

It would be great to figure out what causes these issues. But I've given up hoping for that.

I echo the comments from Griphos. I have a suspicion that it may be related to his custom buildings. Once you get out into the rural areas of those routes my framerate increases to normal on my rig.

Turning TSX off makes no difference at all for me as well.

I suspect this is a likely explanation.

Hmm... Yes that seems plausible. Rascal - Cottonwood uses mostly default stuff and therefor isn't as affected?

I'm glad this post is here because now I can quite worrying about why they won't run and move on to some other routes.

I even tried frame lock and it didn't help.

Question:
How can you delete a route you bought from steam and keep steam from reinstalling it again?

I don't think that's possible.

Possible, I suppose. But the worst offending areas in OS, such as Dover yard, don't have many buildings. I think it's something to do with the track. If I look away from the track out on the line, FPS is good. When I look back at the line, it falls. Even empty, Dover Yard crawls.

You can uninstall the route with the Package Manager, but, as was already said, Steam will reinstall it if you do a file verify.

I know I'm reviving an old thread, but in fairness to Rich, I think this issue deserves an update. After the update to 2013, I tried OS again, just to see I couldn't believe my eyes when after loading up a scenario, I found myself sitting at a very busy Dover yard with FPS locked at 30! I ran two scenarios, and never dipped below that 30 lock even once. Can't tell you how pleased I'm to finally be able to run this route and enjoy Rich's realistic scenarios.

It's worth giving the route another try guys after the update. Hopefully your experience will be the same.

OS2 is in my near future I believe, and I can finally think about his new route.

i tried the "Cloton and Northern" and the "Fort Kent" routes and did not see a change in frame rates (14) although they seem to work a little better. (less studder than before but I don't know how to measre studdert).

PS: will try Ohio 2 this week end.
