US Signals for Castle Rock

Unread postby ChrisNH » Tue Aug 07, 2012 11:46 am

Hi,

I reviewed the documentation for signals included with the game but have some confusion. I resolved them somewhat during play by relying on my knowledge of real world signaling.

1. I encountered red over blinking red. After much gnashing of teeth I decided to interpret that as "stop and proceed at restricted speed (15mph)". Was that correct for the game?

2. The PDF "RW Keyboard Signal Guide_Web" has a separate set of signals for junctions. For "regular" signals red on red is stop. For junctions it is stop and proceed. How am I to know when a signal is a "junction" signal. Did they mean it has a number board?

3. How does the computer know when I am talking to my wife? I always hit the restricting ones when she has taken my eyes off the screen.

My first time posting here. This board seems to capture my angle on the game, glad I found it.

Regards,

Chris

1. Yes, that seems to be correct, at least in my experience.
2. For regular signals, it's not so much that red on red means stop so much as just red means stop. A signal will be showing an aspect that controls a junction any time more than just the top most signal head is involved. For example, red over yellow, or any flashing red. And yes, there should be a number board for junction signals that allow a stop and proceed aspect. I can't think of any right now on Castle Rock, but you'll probably encounter them more on the Cajon Pass route.
3. Because the RW devs included a psychic module. It's the reason why the simulation runs so slow, it takes a lot of computing power to read brainwaves and actions.

There is an old rule of thumb in reading a US signal. If it is not read red, then it is not red. Any other color or flashing "up grades" the signal condition. An example of all of this is the signal you questioned about. Top aspect red. Bottom aspect flashing. In this case red. The flashing lower red "upgrades" the signal condition from stop to proceed THROUGH diverging route at restricted speed expecting a stop (red) signal. Restricted speed is generally 1/2 line of site you should be able to stop your train.

If it's not all red, it's not red at all.

Or when the phone rings, or the doorbell, etc. Keep practicing to improve your speed in finding and tapping the ESC key ... and remember to save often so you can recover from a problem.
