Tutorial with pictures ready for upload, need your approval

Unread postby imnew » Sun Sep 25, 2011 2:31 pm

Hi guys and gals,

I was wondering if anyone had some insight on this one. I have just created a step by step route building tutorial for TS2012. This is a tutorial i wish to upload to various sites, to help people get into route building, with terrain, markers and decals. Its a, press here and there, follow along with pictures kinda tutorial.

It covers, DEM, RWDecal, RWTools, BILxSRTM.

Anyways, ive been using the following terrain data, two different ones ,

http://seamless.usgs.gov/website/seamless/viewer.htm NED 1/3 Arc Second ( sadly no NED 1/9 ARC was available for the area of the tutorial, US ,Illinois/Indiana )

and

http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1/ ... h_America/ SRTM V2_1

What terrain would any of you go for in a route ? Wich one of these terrain files are the best in your opinion?

Just want to make sure i havent missed some"new, undiscovered" terrain data before uploading the tuorial.

currently for the US, the USGS seamless server is probably the most detailed, 1/3arc data is available for about 95% of the country.

That's the procedure I've been covering in the tutorial, great.

Thanks for replying barnez.

I have been holding off creating my Ohio routes for the arrival of RW3. They said there were going to be improved tools for creation of routes. I admit,I have not explored the new editor yet,I am waiting on info and tutorials to see whats new and improved.

Please do upload it to the library as misk, it sounds like it would be really useful, especially for new route builders. I never was able to get the track to join properly, perhaps this would also help me in possibly building a route.

Before you upload, check with the new route creator doc that RSDerek just posted.

hi guys,

thanks for replying. Just to clarify, this tutorial, 36 steps with text and images, is more of a, shall we say, how to set up your routes using RWDecal, RWTools and BilXSRTM. It doesnt show anything related to how to lay track, place signals or any of that... it shows you the most important thing to any route project, the setup .

This tutorial will only show you how to set up your route project. 36 steps, showing an actual project in the making. Its shows, how to capture terrain from usgs seamless server, how to convert terrain files to HGT files, how to import decals, route markers and so on...

Its been uploaded and will be in the file library soon. I hope you guys have a go at it, its my first tutorial, i want feedback !!det!! Tell me what you like or dislike about the tutorial, and i will make the corrections.

We, thats you and me, need more people taking the plunge into routebuilding.

Thanks for the heads up on RSDereks post, im looking through it now. Tutorial is still valid and has been uploaded.

It's now available in the Miscellaneous Files Section.

Edit 1: Just to keep everything under one topic, see this link for further discussion about this tutorial.
