No tint for windows...what's going on with that?

Unread postby wongsing » Sat Aug 13, 2011 9:15 am

Hey everyone, I know that some other website has recently made an alpha fix for the SD70ACE windows so they can be tinted as they are on the prototypes, but when running my new dash 9's I noticed that they nor any other of my locis have tinted windows. Is there a fix for this too or is it because of the way the model was built that prevents it? If anyone can help with this that would be great! The windows appear to be so bright they are non existent...anyone else think so?

This is a model specific issue, the reason why the windows are clear is because the cab model is shared with the exterior model, and the cab model needs to have clear windows to see out of. I haven't tried this, buy when building the model you could distinguish the two window models for reflective (for exterior) and non-reflective (for interior), making the windows appear real.

So is there a fix for this then? I know there is a fix for the ACe but is that because it was built differently? Any help with this would be great! Really love this engine, but man, looks alittle strange with no windows.

Rich,

It in fact is possible to achieve the same effect found in Jerry Conway's SD70ACe mod on the RSC Dash 9 model. While the Dash 9 does utilize the same model for both the interior and exterior cab, the texture for the windshields is one-sided, i.e. the windshield is clear from the inside regardless of the exterior appearance. Because of this, you can adjust the opacity of the windshield by modifying the windshield texture's alpha channel. If you have the full version of Adobe Photoshop, this can be done right in the editor. If you use another, less-sophisticated editor (as I do), you can use a utility such as DXTBmp to grant you access to the alpha channel. I have modified the opacity and texture of my Dash 9 windshields with very satisfying results as seen below:

With a little experimentation, the effect can be quite convincing.

Yes, I have modified alpha channels myself before too, but could you upload that anyway? I know there are lots of folks that would really want it! Thanks!
