There is a new train operating game on the horizon for pc via steam. No, not Railroads online nor is it Derail valley - it is the sim previously known as "Shortline Simulation" - Railroader.
Looks to be a bit of a cross between the operational aspects of Railroads online - at this point fairly simple controls, but listening to the developers Q&A, there is scope for expanded operations in a post release version. It is designed for both single and multi-player, and has some of the features that have been long sought in TSC - do you want to rind the grab irons on the box car - go for it, ride at the work table or cupola in the caboose - have at it, ride the loco steps or rear caboose platform - knock yourself out. Switching on the fly is also possible. This game looks to be a cross between entertainment and operations. It is not revenue driven like RR online, but looks at operations on a pre-constructed shortline operation in the 1950's in the eastern USA. There is an un-named Class 1 which brings cars into and out of the interchange and then jobs to be worked- passenger, mixed and local freights with emphasis on switching cars for the local industries, both in and out. - entertainment with a purpose. It looks pretty good and the sounds are great. There are existine Class 1 conductors and preserved steam engineers involved with its creation. IMO it will be worth keeping an eye on. Should be here in about 8-10 months.
