How to deal with the gradients of Clear Creek?

Unread postby Nicolás » Wed Nov 06, 2019 1:35 pm

I'm trying to get started on the freight scenarios (specifically the one where you go from Golden to Forks Creek) and I can't go very far before my train stops due to the steep gradient and weight of the cargo. I'm playing with the scripted fireman of the loco as the manual recommends. I have good enough steam pressure but I still can't get past the first steep section. Do I have to fire it manually?

I have found that doing the firing works best manually. Even then it can be quite tricky. Make sure the blower is on and the dampers are open.

I recently got CC on sale, fantastic stuff.

Have a look at the manual, the E key is paramount (only figured that out today myself *!lol!* )

I generally leave the throttle near full once rolling and adjust the reverser as needed - but in all honesty practice makes perfect with steam... something im nowhere near

I know how to use the scripted fireman of the loco, my point is that even on its maximum setting (five blue; controlling both fire and water) it's not enough to climb the very first steep gradients of the route with a freight train, despite the manual saying such setting is meant for climbing with high tonnage trains. Previously I could sort this by driving at a slower speeds, but on this scenario (Clear Creek Freight I) no matter what speed I drive I always stop at the first 3.9% gradient.

Don't expect to make a good speed. Just crawl up the hill as best you can. Going slow is better than running out of steam.
